아이보리빛 햇살이 스며든 궁전의 계단 위로 거대한 행성들이 양쪽 난간을 따라 이어집니다. 서로 다른 크기와 형태로 거리를 두고 놓인 행성들은 감정의 조각으로도, 관계 속의 사람들로도 읽힙니다.

중요한 것은 행성 자체보다 그 사이에 형성된 거리입니다. 균형은 모두가 같은 크기와 간격을 유지하는 것이 아니라, 서로의 차이를 지키며 관계에 알맞은 거리를 찾아가는 과정입니다.

Bathed in ivory light, monumental planets line both sides of a palace staircase. Varying in size and form, and placed at measured distances from one another, they can be read as fragments of emotion or as individuals within a relationship.

What matters is not the planets themselves, but the distance formed between them. Balance does not mean maintaining identical sizes or equal intervals; it is the process of finding the right distance within a relationship while preserving each other’s differences.

1970년대부터 2000년대에 이르기까지 권훈칠의 회화는 끊임없이 새로운 형태로 나아갔지만, 그 바탕에 놓인 작가의 태도와 회화에 대한 헌신은 한결같았습니다. 그 깊고 치열한 여정을 2027년 1월 갤러리도올에서 열리는 권훈칠 전시를 통해 다시 만나보시기 바랍니다.

삼각형의 반복과 변주는 부분과 전체, 규칙과 차이가 조화를 이루는 질서를 형성합니다. 카드보드는 색과 형태의 구조를 받치는 바탕으로 작용하고, 미세한 색채의 차이는 기하학적 화면에 생동감을 더합니다. 작품은 동일한 형태 안에 차이를 축적하며, 반복을 통해 살아 있는 균형과 질서가 만들어지는 과정을 보여줍니다.

Created by coating cardboard with acrylic paint, dividing it into triangles, and reassembling them, the work reflects Kwon Hoon Chill’s exploration of the relationship between color and form. Although the repeated triangles retain the same shape, subtle variations in tone and intensity give each one a distinct character. Rather than emphasizing individual colors, these differences create a unified rhythm and movement across the composition.

The repetition and variation of triangles establish an order in which the part and the whole, regularity and difference, exist in harmony. Cardboard serves as a support for the structure of color and form, while delicate variations in color bring vitality to the geometric composition. By accumulating difference within a repeated form, the work reveals how a living sense of balance and order emerges through repetition.

권훈칠의 추상 작업은 완성된 결과보다 그림이 만들어지는 과정에서 형성되는 색의 공간에 주목합니다. ‘어떻게 그려낼 것인가’는 작가에게 중요한 연구 과제였으며, 화면에 남겨진 흔적과 색면의 배치에는 추상의 공간을 탐색해온 사유의 과정이 담겨 있습니다.

의 반복과 변주로 나아가기 이전에 제작된 연작은 몇 개의 사각형으로 화면을 분할하고 색으로 채우며 추상의 공간을 구성한 작업입니다. 색면의 연결과 겹침은 화면 안에 거리와 깊이를 만들어냅니다. 이탈리아 유학 중 이콘(icon) 기법을 익힌 작가는 일부 작품에 금분을 사용하기도 했습니다. 비잔틴 모자이크와 한국의 조각보를 연상시키는 이 연작은 색과 면만으로 이루어진 화면을 통해 회화적 추상의 가능성을 보여줍니다.

Kwon Hoon Chill’s abstract practice focuses less on the finished image than on the space of color formed through the process of painting. For the artist, “how to paint” remained a central question, and the traces and arrangements of color fields on the surface embody his sustained exploration of abstract space.

Created before the repetition and variation of the Mandala series, the Untitled works construct abstract space by dividing the surface into rectangular fields and filling them with color. Their connections and overlaps create a sense of distance and depth. While studying in Italy, Kwon learned icon-painting techniques and incorporated gold powder into some of these works. Evoking both Byzantine mosaics and Korean jogakbo patchwork, the series explores the possibilities of pictorial abstraction through color and plane alone.
