The currently accepted scientific name, *Raphia farinifera*, traces back to an early description under the name *Sagus farinifera*, published by Joseph Gaertner in 1791.
1800–1806: Emergence of the name "Raphia."

📍 Where is raffia found in Madagascar?

Historical research indicates a strong presence in low-lying wetland areas, particularly in the northwest and east.

A study published in 1933 notes that raffia was particularly widespread at the time in northwestern Madagascar, in territories traditionally associated with the Sakalava people.
