10 WAYS TO READ FOOD LABELS

1. Read the ingredient list — ingredients are generally listed from highest to lowest weight.
2. Look beyond “gluten-free” — it does not automatically mean healthy or nutritious.
3. Check for added sugars — look for glucose syrup, maltodextrin, dextrose and other forms of sugar.
4. Watch the sodium content — excess sodium can contribute to high blood pressure.
5. Recognise artificial sweeteners — check for aspartame, sucralose and acesulfame-K.
6. Identify preservatives — learn to recognise ingredients such as sodium nitrite and certain benzoates.
7. Check colourings and flavour enhancers — identify additives such as tartrazine and monosodium glutamate (MSG).
8. Look for partially hydrogenated oils — these may contain harmful industrial trans fats.
9. Check allergens and cross-contamination warnings — especially important for people with coeliac disease.
10. Compare products before buying — choose options with simpler ingredients and better nutritional values.

Remember: Not every additive is harmful, and the presence of an additive does not automatically mean a product causes cancer. Learn to read labels, question marketing claims and make informed choices.
