Raising Active Kids: A Gift That Lasts a Lifetime
From the moment my daughters were born, I made it a priority to encourage movement and physical activity. Even as babies, they had plenty of tummy time, and I helped them learn to creep and crawl because these activities play an important role in brain development.
As a result, all three girls learned to walk before their first birthday. Cass even started walking at just 9 months old despite the health challenges she faced.
When Alycia and Sherilyn were toddlers, I brought them for morning and evening walks every day. I was fortunate to work from home and had the help of live-in maids with household chores, which gave me the time to focus on my children. We spent hours outdoors running, crawling, climbing, swinging, hanging from monkey bars, and simply being active. By the end of the day, they were happily exhausted and slept soundly through the night. They were such easy sleepers.
Naturally, they grew up loving movement and exercise. Today, they enjoy a wide variety of activities, both indoors and outdoors—gym workouts, bouldering, figure skating, dancing, martial arts, hiking, swimming, running, tennis, badminton, trampoline dodgeball, pickleball, and more.
As a competitive figure skater, Cass also does off-ice training every single day. She is incredibly disciplined when it comes to both her on-ice and off-ice practice.
After Cass was born, I often took her with me in her stroller while I went for my morning jogs. On rainy days, when I couldn't run outside, I would jump on the trampoline in our patio while she sat in her stroller watching me.
The wonderful thing is that I never had to force any of my girls to exercise. Being active became a natural part of who they are. Looking back, I believe that helping them develop a love for movement is one of the greatest gifts I could have given them.
Exercise is about so much more than fitness or appearance. It builds strength, confidence, resilience, discipline, and emotional well-being. The habits our children develop when they are young often stay with them for life.
So if you have young children, encourage them to move, run, climb, jump, explore, and play. Join them whenever you can. The memories you create together will be priceless, and the love for an active lifestyle may become one of the greatest investments you ever make in their future health and happiness.
