β€œChaos.”

That’s the word one Meta employee reportedly used to describe the mood inside the company ahead of expected mass layoffs.

According to an internal document obtained by Reuters, the layoffs are expected to take place in three phases, with affected employees receiving notification emails starting at 4 a.m. local time in their respective regions.

The cuts come after Reuters reported in April that Meta had installed tracking software on the computers of U.S.-based employees to monitor mouse movements, clicks, and keystrokes. Internal memos reportedly showed the data collection was linked to a broader effort to train Meta’s AI models and develop AI agents capable of autonomously handling workplace tasks.

The concept refers to experimental batteries that use radioactive materials to generate electricity over extremely long periods. These are often called nuclear batteries or betavoltaic devices.

They work by converting energy released from radioactive decay into electrical power. Unlike conventional batteries, they don’t need recharging because the decay process is continuous.

Scientists have explored using materials like carbon-14 or other isotopes derived from nuclear waste. Some prototypes are designed to last thousands of years, but they produce very small amounts of power.

These batteries are not meant for everyday devices like smartphones or laptops. Instead, they are ideal for low-power applications such as space probes, medical implants, or remote sensors.

While promising, the technology is still limited in efficiency and scalability. Safety, cost, and practical use cases remain key challenges before widespread adoption.
