Barely looking at a road design like this, a lay-man could query “why not just make it a straight road?” Yet, the professionals who designed it this way knew more than a just regular way of doing things and that is why a professional do not think like a lay-man.
This picture here is Lombard Street in San Francisco, one of the world’s most famous winding roads. Streets like this are deliberately designed with curves or switchbacks for several practical, safety, and aesthetic reasons. Lombard Street was not initially built to look like this. In the 1920s, the steep natural slope of Russian Hill posed a serious challenge to drivers and homeowners. A straight road would have been too dangerous for vehicles to descend safely, especially given the limited braking power of early automobiles.
A professional designer proposed a solution that was both functional and beautiful (a series of carefully calculated curves that reduced the hill’s gradient while transforming the street into a scenic masterpiece) What was once a risky, inaccessible slope becoming one of the most photographed streets in the world. This transformation could not have happened without architectural and engineering expertise. It required understanding of topography, safety standards, materials, and aesthetics (the very skills that define professional designers).
Curvy road can be designed
1. To Reduce the Steepness of the Slope
2. To Control Vehicle Speed
3. To Prevent Erosion and Drainage Problems
4. To Fit into the Urban Fabric and Landscape
5. For Aesthetic and Touristic Value
If it was in Nigeria, they could have rather introduced bumps. If Lombard Street had been built without expert planning (simply laid straight down the steep hill) it would have been unsafe, eroded quickly, and caused structural damage. This illustrates what happens when people design or build without professional guidance: the result may stand for a while but will lack efficiency, durability, and true aesthetic value.
Hiring professionals is not an unnecessary cost but a wise investment. Architects, planners, and designers bring technical knowledge, creativity, and foresight that ensure every element from materials to human comfort to works in harmony. They see beyond appearances to create spaces that are safe, functional, and sustainable.
Lombard Street proves that when experts handle design, they don’t just solve challenges, they turn them into beauty and experience. Great design, whether in streets, buildings, or cities, is never a coincidence; it’s the result of skill, precision, and vision.
The bottom-line of my post is this: 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐝𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝, 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐛𝐞𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐲. Hire a professional. Your project deserves a Lombard Street touch, one that turns challenges into landmarks.
