Take a close look at these pictures...
One is of a cracked and discolored ceiling and the other one is of Bubbling paint problem on the wall, all in the same room.

Why do you think this is happening?
Our first assignment was to identify the cause of these conditions, we found out it was moisture, more precisely it was rain water soaking through the decking on the top floor.

You must know that painting this room without stopping that problem is a waste of time and money.

What is the solution?

We would have to visit the top floor, stop the source of the rain, then let the decking dry out. Only then can we fill the cracks, scrape off the bubbling paint and reapply a lasting Paint system.

Today was case treatment day and it was both challenging and fun😊...

Remember I made a comparison earlier between a painting technician and a medical Doctor?

Apparently the instructor said that the wall is our patient. Before a stroke of brush comes inspection and diagnosis.

The first case we treated today was that of a bedroom. Upon inspection, we found that it was a cement plaster wall previously painted with a wayer-based Satin sheen paint. The problem was damp and bubbling and the question was..what do you do next after observing the symptoms?

Here was my response, find the source of the problem identified (in this case damp). Likely causes would include rain pe*******on from the exterior wall, leaking plumbing, rising damp among other factors.
We must find out what the real cause of the damp and bubbling is, correct it, inspect to be sure problem is solved. Then and only then can we decide on the best coating system and paint.

If these issues are ignored, we are just painting beautiful nonsense😂, it will fail again within a short time.

Come let me gist you about what we learnt today which is DAY 1 of painting and decorating refresher course....

When most people think about painting, they think about a guy in paint-stained clothes, brushes, rollers and a bucket of paint and when you invite an amateur painter to check out your space for painting, what he will most likely think about is "what color will I paint this space".

While that's not bad, it is supposed to be the very last consideration. What would a professional painter do instead?

A professional painter inspects the surface you want to paint and asks some serious questions such as:

* What type of surface is this? Cement, concrete, metal or wood
* What's the condition: clean, dirty, rough, smooth, cracking, damp, weak
* Source of the problem
* Corrections to be made before repainting

All these must come before color or else you will keep painting problems instead of solving them.

A professional painter thinks like a doctor, the surface is the patient, it's condition are the symptoms, the paint doctor diagnoses the problem and then prescribes the best treatment available..

One thing I have come to realize is, if I must make a change in the world, it must begin with me.

If I must add value to others, I must first add value to myself.

I just put myself on a refresher course in "Painting as a skill and a business".

I will from time to time drop entries of a few things I'm learning here.

You might learn one or two things too.

A few years ago, I was working as a "journey man" with a team of painter on site and one of us received a call.

Apparently, it was a client who had paid him for a painting project and he promised to start the project that day...meanwhile he was doing another project.

He started telling the customer lies and the person on the other end of the phone was obviously upset.

Eventually, he had to select a few of us on site and take us to the other site to start the project to avoid problems.

I shook my head and laughed at the drama.

One thing I understand is that telling lies to your clients is how you destroy your reputation as a professional in any field.

If there will be delays, inform the client as soon as possible.

If you have to handle two projects at once, it helps to have a network of painters you can reach out to to work with you, then your job is to supervise them and ensure your clients are satisfied.

A good name is better than silver and Gold...A good name will eventually bring the silver and Gold in abundance.
