🕊️ In Loving Memory of Mama Emily Olaboye 🕊️

We honour and celebrate the life of Mama Emily Olaboye—a beloved mat weaver, teacher, mentor, and a true custodian of our heritage.

Mama Emily was more than a mat weaver; she was a steady voice of wisdom, a guide, and a pillar we could always rely on—even long after she retired from active weaving.

Whenever we found ourselves stuck on a project, a call to Mama would always bring clarity. Her suggestions were not just helpful—they were precise, thoughtful, and transformative.

In 2024, while working on plain pink mats, we struggled to achieve the exact shade we envisioned. After several attempts at mixing dyes, we reached out to her. In her usual calm and assured manner, she told us there was indeed a specific pink dye, gave us its exact name, and even explained how to confirm the shade before dyeing. That single conversation changed everything.

On another occasion, when we encountered a challenge while she was out of town, she asked that the mats be brought all the way to her in Igbara-Oke, Ondo State.

Within minutes of seeing them, she resolved the issue, and the mats were on their way back to Ogotun-Ekiti. That was Mama —solution-oriented, generous with her time, and always willing to help.

Her impact was widely recognised, and she was honoured by the Ekiti State Government for her outstanding contributions to mat weaving in Ogotun-Ekiti on 1st October 2014.

Beyond her skill, Mama had a heart that gave freely. In 2018, at the wedding of our Creative Director, she surprised us by making a special, one-of-a-kind mat as a gift—an act that deeply touched us and endeared her to us even more.

Mama was hardworking, excellent in her craft, and a true abiyamo—a loving and devoted mother who held her children close and raised them with strength and care.

Her skill, knowledge, generosity, and quiet strength will be greatly missed. Her behind-the-scenes support, her wisdom, and her presence cannot be replaced.

Yet, we are grateful—grateful for the privilege of learning from her, working with her, and being guided by her.

🕊️ “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18

As she is laid to rest today, we pray for comfort for her family, strength for our community, and grace to continue the work she was part of.

Rest well, Eye Seri.
Your legacy lives on in every mat, every lesson, and every life you touched. 🤍

There is a moment when raw material begins to transform and that is at the 6th stage.

This is the dyeing process, when the strand meets colour, and identity starts to emerge.

Today, we step into the dyeing process — a delicate balance of timing, skill, and tradition.

Each strand absorbs more than colour; it carries heritage, intention, and artistry.

In Ogotun-Ekiti, every piece of mat tells a story of tradition, community and heritage.

At Estera Concepts, every piece tells a story—long before it reaches your space.

What colour would you love to see woven into your space?

We honour and celebrate the beautiful life of Mama Felister Agbedahunsi, one of our mat weavers at Ogotun-Ekiti, who peacefully transitioned last week.

Mama Felister was a woman of strength, skill, and quiet excellence. Her hands told stories—woven into every mat she made were years of dedication, culture, and love for her craft.

She was hardworking, always diligent at her work; jovial, with a smile that warmed hearts.

She was deeply supportive, encouraging younger women and standing faithfully with the Ogotun mat-weaving community.

She was not just a weaver; she was a custodian of heritage, a mother in the truest sense, and a living reminder that dignity and purpose endure at every age.

Her absence will be deeply felt, but her legacy lives on in the mats she wove, the lives she touched, and the culture she helped preserve.

We pray for comfort for her family, strength for the Ogotun-Ekiti weaving community, and grace to carry forward the legacy she so faithfully upheld 🙏

Rest well, Mama

You will be greatly missed, and never forgotten🤍

DRYING ☀️

After harvesting, slicing and carefully filing, the 'Iran' (Thaumatococcus daniellii stem) enters its next transformation — drying.

At this stage, the sliced strands are gently dried in the sun to reduce water content while preserving their natural pliability.

This balance is crucial. Too dry, and the strands become brittle. Too moist, and they cannot weave beautifully.

Drying is patience.
Drying is precision.
Drying is preparation for strength.

Every mat from Ogotun carries the story of process, care and tradition — long before it becomes art in your hands.

What season of “drying” has prepared you for strength in your own life? ✨

There is something about African mats. They are more than woven straws — they are woven stories.

From the royal courtyards to family homes, each mat has a unique meaning and different uses:
a place of honour, a symbol of welcome, a seat of wisdom, a keeper of tradition, and a bridge between generations.

Each mat is hand-woven with patience and tenacity.

They are deeply rooted in culture.

Passed down generations with pride.

When you step on an African mat, you step into history.

When you hold a piece of an African mat, you are holding history

And if you ever get to carry an Ogotun mat, you are carrying decades old history.

Our experience in mat-weaving over the years has taught us that water plays an important role in our process. So, whoever it was that said 'water e no get enemy' is definitely correct.

We’ve found that lightly dampening the 'iran' strands before weaving makes a big difference.

They’re easier to work with, break less, and the mat comes out looking neater.

It’s one of those small things that really help.

Do you have a little trick you always use when working with your hands? Or a tool that seems insignificant but is really helpful for your work?

Estera Concepts – Weaving Heritage, Empowering Women!!

At Estera Concepts, we celebrate the beauty and heritage of Ogotun-Ekiti through the art of traditional mat weaving.

Each mat we create, exhibit & sell is more than just a home accessory or fashion statement — it’s a story woven by the skilled hands of women who have preserved this craft for generations.

Our artisans use age-old techniques, passed from mother to daughter, to produce exquisite, durable, and culturally rich mats that bring warmth, elegance, and authenticity to any space.

Every purchase directly supports these women, empowering them economically while helping to keep a treasured tradition alive.

From the vibrant patterns to the lasting quality, each Ogotun mat (eni iran) is a piece of culture you can see, touch, and cherish.

Whether in Nigeria or across the globe, we deliver not just a product, but a connection to a proud heritage.

Today, we move to Stage 4 of the Ogotun-Ekiti mat weaving process — cutting and filing the Thaumatococcus daniellii (Ìrán).

Stage 4 is all about patience and precision.

The women of Ogotun-Ekiti take each stalk of Thaumatococcus daniellii and gently split it into two or three pieces (depending on their size) before filing the strands smooth.

This quiet, careful process transforms raw plant fibres into clean, workable strands — the very foundation of every mat they weave.

Every stroke of the knife prepares the material for the artistry that follows.

This stage may look simple, but it requires skill, precision, and patience.

A perfectly prepared strand means a cleaner weave, tighter patterns, and a longer-lasting mat.
