Studio Julie Marabelle

Studio Julie Marabelle Julie Marabelle is a creative studio exploring art, design, and modern craftsmanship. Formerly Famille Summerbelle. She exhibited her work in Paris and Tokyo.

Welcome to Famille Summerbelle, a creative company founded by French artist Julie Marabelle. What started as a personal project to create something unique and playful for her children’s bedroom has grown into an extensive range of illustrated products for family homes. In 2008, after a decade immersed in the creative scene of London—studying at Central Saint Martins and designing sets for theatre

productions and launching Famille Summerbelle this same year—Julie embarked on a six-month travel around the world with her husband and their little toddler. She came back full of inspiration to start a series of intricate paper cut maps inspired by her travels and the Cities she had lived in. These maps, starting with Paris, became a signature of Famille Summerbelle. Julie’s delicate paper illustrations are hand cut on a single sheet of paper. She uses a chirurgical scalpel to skilfully cut all the details, a tool she has been using for designing theatre stage models. Each hand cut piece is then laser cut in limited editions in the Netherlands or hand screen printed in the UK. Her commitment to details and craftsmanship is evident in every piece. She appreciates the way a work of art, whether delicately cut or brightly coloured, will bring a sense of belonging and joy in people's interiors. With nature as a major source of inspiration, Julie describes her work as a continuous exploration of shapes, patterns and colours that she expresses through intricate paper cuttings, drawings and paintings. When she’s not in her studio, you’ll find Julie on her bike cycling along the canals of Amsterdam, where she lives with her family. As a freelance illustrator, Julie has collaborated with International brands such as Issey Miyake, Bonton, Le Printemps , Panahome Japan, The Londoner Hotel Macao, BNP Paribas, the V&A and 72 & Sunny among others. Amaryllis pattern on wallpaper drawn with oil sticks . I left this amaryllis bulb in a pot of water for months and now, 6 magnificent red flowers have bloomed on a long stem. Magic! ❤️

I drew a branch from a beautiful bouquet of lilies that perfume my studio. I like the texture of the wall, it gives the lines a grainy effect. Sennelier oil stick on black paper, 60x80cm
Sorry for the awkward angle from which the video was shot…

A quick recap of my amaryllis drawings taking shape.
I drew them directly on the floor, sometimes with my right hand, sometimes with my left. That’s the advantage of being ambidextrous, I can experiment with more precise or imperfect lines depending on which hand I’m drawing with!

I love the vibrant colors of oil pastels, but they melt so quickly between my fingers when I’m drawing, I think I need to buy larger ones.

Which one do you prefer? The first one, monochrome or the ones with more colourful lines?

I have a beautiful bouquet of amaryllis that I had to draw before it fades!
Yesterday I took the time to observe few flowers closely, not to copy them but to extract a simple form, a clean line and try to capture come of its energy.

I’ve always been inspired by the work of I love his work.
I like to play with bold, vibrant colours, either by using oil sticks on large sheets of tissue paper, or by cutting the form directly from large sheets of bold colours.

Yesterday we went for a long bike ride. It was still a bit chilly, but it felt so good to see the sun and the first flowers blooming!
Spring has finally arrived in Amsterdam!
There’s something so magical to see see nature wake up after a long winter and to switch from grey to the colours I love: green, blue, and yellow. 💛 Yellow is a colour that gives me energy, and I think we should use more touches of it in our homes!

I love turning to my books whenever I need to find new colour combinations, shapes, or just some inspiration. For research, I also use Pinterest (link in bio to check my inspiration boards!) or Insta but nothing beats flicking through pages of a book either at home or at a bookstore!

I use these ink studies to explore balance and relationships between + and - shapes , which then help to create larger compositions, such as my large-scale cut-outs

Ink studies on printer paper and glassine (smooth, translucent paper).
I create each sketch by playing with positive and negative shapes (area around the object/void)
It’s a fun exercise in making the shapes stand out and finding the right proportions.
