5 autumn subjects that are actually easy to sketch 🍂

Autumn is honestly one of the best seasons to sketch. I think 💭

The light gets softer. The colours go warm and rich. And suddenly there is beauty absolutely everywhere you look.

Here are five subjects to try this week. Pick one. Just one. And start there.

1️⃣ A ginkgo leaf - that perfect fan shape, all golden
2️⃣ A pile of wet autumn leaves on the pavement
3️⃣ A small cluster of acorns still on the branch
4️⃣ Red berries - bright and glossy against bare twigs
5️⃣ A single mushroom, honest and quiet and perfect

And there is a sixth one hiding inside the carousel. It is a personal favourite of mine for this time of year. Swipe through to find it.

You don’t need to draw them perfectly. You just need to look at them long enough to really see them. That is what sketching does, it slows you down just enough.

Set a timer for 10 minutes. Pick your subject. Start with one line.

The one thing nobody tells you about creative time on vacation 🙏

Nobody will give you more time! Correct me if I am wrong!

Tell your family you need a creative time.

Not “maybe I’ll sketch.” But announce it loud!

“Hey - I need 30 minutes this week, just for me.”

When I said this on our last trip, everything shifted.

Not because my kids became perfectly quiet. Not because my husband just read my mind.
But because I stopped waiting for somebody else to give me permission to do something for myself.

And I realized: I don’t have to ask. I have to announce it. Say it loud, so it becomes real.

It is not selfish. It is not optional. It is your time.

You don’t need to earn it. You just need to say it loud.

This is the kind of space we are building inside the Creative Circle. A space where you don’t have to ask for your own time. It is already yours. You just need to show up, have fun, and slow down by creating something.

We can change it as we want…

Every child draws. Every child paints. Every child makes a mess and calls it beautiful.

Then one day, someone says “stay inside the lines” - and something quietly closes.

I know that feeling. I was there too.

During COVID, I hit a wall. I was becoming a mom, working from home, burning out in a career I once dreamed of architecture. And in the middle of all of that, I picked up a sketchbook.

Not to be good. Just to breathe.

And it saved me.

That’s why I left. And that’s why I’m here to help you open that door again.

Sketchbook sessions for myself on the kitchen counter while waiting for our meal to get ready are my favorite!

It’s also probably my favorite spot where I can find inspiration and references immediately. How? Well, fruits and veggies are the best thing to sketch!

Nobody warns you that vacations with kids are just parenting somewhere else 😅

This is episode one of my new series - 10 decisions I make to get creative during a family vacation with kids. And I’m starting with the most important one.

Decision one: I don’t try to find an hour every day. I won’t find it, and I’ll just feel guilty about it.

Instead - I aim for one hour a week. Or fifteen minutes a day, consistently. That’s it. That’s the whole decision.

Because even fifteen minutes with your sketchbook - or your journal, your knitting, whatever is yours - can completely shift your mood. It’s enough to slow your brain down and remind you that you exist outside of being a parent.

And that feeling? It makes you a better, more present parent for the rest of the day. I really believe that.

I’m opening a community this autumn called the Creative Circle - weekly creative sessions, a warm little group, and space to make things just for you.
