Meet the man behind The Hangman!

When he's not out with clients, Matt is often out in his shed working with timber and fabricating custom brackets so his clients' heavy, awkward pieces sit safely and stay hidden from view. Every so often something on show gets the woodworking treatment too, like a custom mount for a bike.

This craft runs in the family. Matt’s mum has run a framing shop in Mount Eden for more than 25 years, and his dad bought and hung art collections for Auckland corporates, with a young Matt sometimes trailing behind passing the hammer.

Matt's lifelong experience and meticulous attention to detail shows up on every job.

A new piece of art deserves pride of place, and over a mantelpiece is prime real estate. The question is: how high, and do you centre it over the fireplace or over the wall?

Here is our starting rule. The middle of the piece sits at eye level, which works beautifully up to about A2 size. Go bigger and it becomes a judgement call, factoring in stud height and whatever sits below, like a mantel or sideboard that eats into your visible wall.

We recently had the pleasure of installing this striking "face" piece by Waiheke Island sculptor Sally Smith.

Work like this is where careful hands really matter. Mounted directly to the wall rather than sitting inside a frame, it calls for precise fixing, a genuine feel for balance, and a plan to hold it all securely and keep fixings out of sight. The result is a piece that looks like it was made for the wall it lives on.
