Not sure if you can call this suita a sunashi because of the suji lines, but the sharpening face doesn’t seem to have su(holes).

Anyways, this is probably one of the nicest and cleanest suita I have. Smooth and creamy feedback, fast stone, and just enough slurry release. Polishes very nicely as well!

Getting there!

Been trying out ways to bring out the hamon on this tamahagane knife, and I think I’m close. It’s interesting how much darkening the ji helps to bring out the hamon. Crazy looking hamon on this knife, the details on the ha is quite insane as well.

I have to give credit to Ueda-san for smelting the tamahagane, and forging a wonderful knife. This is to date the nicest knife I own. I’m not even including the history of this knife, I’ll share that once I’m done polishing this knife.

Just a quick progress pic of a tamahagane knife I’ve been working on. The funny thing about this knife is the steel banding is so wild that it looks like micro scratches. I’ve tried many stones for the jito step, but still ended up using my Uchigumori Jito.

I still have to address the low spot that would erase the kanji if I tackle it. Not sure how I’m gonna do that. lol

Slicing through papers might be one of the most popular test of sharpness, but have you tried the “Potato Wedge Test”?

This video is a prime example of great geometry and sharpening to perfection. Simply cut a potato, and check if any of the wedge sticks to the sides of the knife. Sharp knife does make a difference, but great geometry is what sets a knife apart from the rest. This is “The Way of Zero”

This is possibly one of the nicest looking shiro I’ve held my hands on. The look speaks for itself, so I have not much to say about this stone. This stone cuts very fast. Releases slurry quite quickly, and that makes it begginer friendly. Classy finish, easy to use and easy to get an even finish with. I’d say it’s a great finisher for clad steel knives, for honyaki it’s great for hagane work.

Another stone that’s staying in my collection. 🙌🏼

Sooo.. What are B-Grade stones?

These stones have a lot of inclusions and possibly toxic(releases random particles that scratches the steel). I would test these stones, but there are no guarantees. Thus selling these stones at a discount.

I’ve held back for a long time from buying Uchigumori stones. First, they’re extremely expensive. Second, I felt my Suita stones would perform about the same. I was wrong. Long story short, this is now my third Uchigumori stone. They’re still quite expensive tho! HAHA!

I’ll try my best to explain an Uchi’s finish. The finish is misty, hazy, and matte as expected. On the other hand, the details pop as if the steel were burnished. Velvety and smooth polishing experience. Like Namikawa said, “There is no artificial substitute stone.” I completely agree. I’ve been polishing honyaki and nihonto tamahagane lately, and it’s hard to find stones that behave quite like an Uchigumori.

This stone is currently not for sale. It’s very difficult to find softer Uchigumori stones nowadays. So this would stay in my collection for quite some time.

Have you ever gotten a stone that just works? I thought this was just a plain olde tomae, but surprise! Tons of su on its surface(see close up photo). Beginner friendly, great feedback, and slurries just right. Hazy clad and hazy core, quite a classic Kasumi finish.

Well.. The JNAT that started it all. I was originally polishing on synths and trying my best to make kasumi finish out of it. While that looks great, this JNAT made the synth kasumi look like a child’s work. Misty, contrasty, detailed, but at the same time glossy. I’d say this is the baseline on what a good kasumi is. It’s just right.

Sadly this JNAT is on its way to Asheville, NC. I’m glad that the next owner would enjoy polishing/sharpening with this JNAT. Yes, I do ship internationally/locally. So if you’re looking for something specific. Just hit me up!
