Calling all Gubatnon visual artists aged 15 years old and above, the GUBAT HERITAGE CENTER ART COMPETITION entitled “Gira: Gubatnon Heritage Structures on Art” is now officially open!

Divided into two categories – “On Canvas” for oil and acrylic and “On Paper” for charcoal, oil pastel, and watercolor. Each entry should feature a Gubatnon heritage structure that either still exists or non-existing (as long as there is a photographic reference that the artist can present to the organizers during its submission) that is at least 50 years old or older.

Visit the Gubat Heritage Center to sign-up and know more about the guidelines and requirements for the competition. Deadline of entries is on APRIL 29, 2022.

Only those who don't cringe on ceramic plate squeak.

It would not be a complete painter’s gear without the paint-mixing palette.
I used to cut 10”x14 “x ¼ “ plywood for my palette and made a 2- inch hole near the corner for easy gripping. (until now I can’t figure out which finger or fingers should I insert, my thumb or my four fingers) I intended to duplicate the old painter’s mixing palette for a “painter ang dating” reason. I noticed that plywood absorbs excess water from your mixed paints and that’s great but If you let paints dry for days that’s what you hate. To solve this, I’ve tried to use a transparent plastic cover and used the transparent plastic envelope as a mixing palette layer. Then I came with a piece of old glass jalousie and it worked well. Found it smooth, easy to mix, and easy to clean.
Here’s my mixing paint palette from the old refrigerator's glass fruits and veggies compartment.
Note: If you are not used to grays, I recommend you to paint it with a low light or just enough to kill the white.

We need colors.
We know that colors affect our moods and feelings. They represent things around us, we mention sky, wood, tree, sun, and others. Aspiring leaders represent too with their chosen hue to connote their personalities.
As an ARTIST what is your decision if you were been offered by several candidates in different parties to paint a mural or to paint digitally? If you are a REGISTERED VOTER and…

a student who accepts commission paintings to buy school needs and other related expenses
a novice painter who needs more painting experience
a school teacher and a painting coach (too many things to be considered I know)
a freelance artist who owns a shop or a studio. (can be excluded here)
Is it between your stand or being an artist? Is it between your job or your political views?
No matter what, it is your choice to exercise and express being a Filipino and being an artist. We’ll not argue on that.

Sometimes it’s quite disturbing when you return your excess or unused acrylic paint in the can or container (it is silly if you force to fill it in a tube). It may mix with the other colors present on your mixing palette. Unwanted dried and flaky paints will appear on your canvas. All of these will affect your painting quality. A life hack you may adapt to slow down the drying of the paint. If you are using a tray mixing palette, just wrap it in big transparent plastic cellophane. Seal the plastic by twisting it or securing using tape. If you are using a flat mixing palette, you may insert two 1”x1 “pieces of wood to avoid the paint touching the plastic. Less worry if you are going to continue the painting session the next day.

You purchased a set of brushes and found out the pointed and chisel-shaped ends of your brushes. At first, we thought that it is just a design from the manufacturer.
The pointed and chisel-shaped brush end's main purpose is for Sgraffito or scraping technique. A useful thing to reveal the underpainting, for grass effect, preliminary lettering, and rapid sketch (instead of paint during foreground painting). Bonus part: It helps you reach your back during scratching sessions.
