1. By Composition & Performance
a) Water-Based Epoxy
· Description: A low-odor, low-VOC option where epoxy is emulsified in water. Easier and safer to apply, especially in spaces with poor ventilation.
· Key Characteristics:
· Appearance: Typically provides a satin or semi-gloss finish. Clarity is lower than solvent-based.
· Durability: Good chemical and stain resistance, but generally not as hard or durable as 100% solids epoxy. Can be prone to wearing or yellowing under UV light.
· Curing: Cures by ev***ration and coalescence.
· Best For: Residential garages, basements, light commercial spaces where odor is a concern, and as a primer/sealer for concrete.
· Pros: Easy cleanup, low odor, breathable (allows moisture v***r transmission), more affordable.
· Cons: Less durable, thinner film build, lower gloss.
b) Solvent-Based Epoxy
· Description: The traditional epoxy system that uses solvents (like xylene) to reduce viscosity and improve pe*******on. Creates a very strong bond.
· Key Characteristics:
· Appearance: High-gloss, professional finish.
· Durability: Excellent adhesion, hardness, and chemical resistance. The solvent helps it pe*****te deeply into porous concrete.
· Curing: Cures through a chemical reaction; solvents ev***rate.
· Best For: Industrial floors, automotive shops, warehouses with heavy traffic and chemical exposure.
· Pros: Superior adhesion, high chemical resistance, durable, good moisture tolerance.
· Cons: Strong fumes (requires respirators and ventilation), flammable, longer curing times, environmental and disposal concerns.
c) 100% Solids Epoxy
· Description: The premium, high-performance category. Contains no solvents or water—just epoxy resins and hardeners. Measured by volume, not weight.
· Key Characteristics:
· Appearance: Can be crystal clear, high-gloss, and maintains color depth. Ideal for decorative flake and quartz systems.
· Durability: Extremely thick, dense, and durable coat. Highest chemical, abrasion, and impact resistance.
· Curing: 100% chemical reaction—what you apply is what stays on the floor (no ev***ration loss).
· Best For: Heavy industrial facilities, commercial kitchens, pharmaceutical plan
