‘Lapis Lazuli: The Wound and the Archive II’
Lapis lazuli, amazonite, afghanite and copper on metal
42 × 11.1 × 1.5 in (106.7 × 28.2 × 3.8 cm)

Presented in ‘Haus Edit, Vol. 1’
Curated by Zarmeene Shah & Seher Aziz

Following its initial presentation at the Egyptian Museum, Cairo as part of Art D’Egypte 2025.

The work approaches lapis lazuli as material and memory. Hand-cut fragments are applied as a second skin over a metal framework, forming a fractured, stratified surface. A central rupture interrupts continuity, while fine copper seams trace lines of breakage and repair. Inflections of amazonite and afghanite extend the chromatic field.

Drawing on inlay traditions that moved across Central and West Asia into Egypt, the work repositions these languages within a contemporary sculptural framework, where fragmentation becomes a condition for holding and reassembling histories.

Meherunnisa Asad is a multidisciplinary artist and Artistic Director of Studio Lél, a stone atelier founded by her mother, Farhana Asad, in Peshawar. Her practice reimagines the heritage of applied arts through a contemporary sculptural language, rooted in pietra dura and extended through metalwork and lapidary processes. Trained at the National College of Arts, Lahore, and Pratt Institute, New York, she previously worked in architectural conservation with the Aga Khan Historic Cities Programme. She works closely with artisans from her Pashtun community, alongside collaborations with Afghan and regional makers. Her work has been exhibited internationally in gallery and institutional contexts. She lives and works between Pakistan and Egypt.

While wars redraw borders, craft continues to cross them.

In the 1980s, when the Soviet war broke Afghanistan open, millions crossed into Peshawar. Among them were master artisans carrying knowledge that had travelled for centuries- stone inlay, lapidary traditions, ways of working that cannot be archived, only practiced.

It was in that moment that my mother began Studio Lél with one Afghan master artisan, in the garage of our home, in a city shaped by displacement.

Over time, the workshop became a shared ground. Pakistanis and Afghans- working side by side. Not as an idea of collaboration, but as a condition of survival.

Over the past year, as thousands of Afghans have been sent back across the same border, that history folds in on itself again. Many of those returning have lived for decades in Pakistan- some knowing no other home.

Where will we go after the last frontier,
where will the birds fly after the last sky.

The question remains.

I keep thinking of him. The turquoise ring. The way his hand knows where each tool rests without looking.

His hands have shaped this work for years.

I call him in Kabul. “How are you? Are you safe? Are the kids okay?”

There is a history held in these hands- carried across generations, worked into the surface over time.

Now it shifts again.

The work continues. But the surface carries his absence.

Really moved by Khaled Zaki’s solo, The Path, presented by Le Lab, at the Sultan al-Ghuri Complex. There’s something rare about sitting inside a 1500s Mamluk structure where stone isn’t just a material, it’s a language.
