Japanese dragons (ryū or tatsu – 龍 or 竜) are legendary creatures in Japanese mythology, deeply influenced by Chinese dragons but with distinct characteristics. Unlike their Western counterparts, which are often depicted as fire-breathing and aggressive, Japanese dragons are generally benevolent, water-related deities associated with rainfall, rivers, and the sea.

Japanese koi fish Kochaku and Showa

66 x 36 cm

Koi fish are considered a symbol of good fortune, perseverance, and success in Japanese culture. The Japanese have a long tradition of breeding koi, with the practice dating back to the early 19th century. These fish are admired for their vibrant colors, graceful movements, and their associations with strength and determination, as they are known to swim upstream against strong currents.

Koi are often featured in Japanese gardens, ponds, and art, and they play a central role in cultural events like Children’s Day (where koi-shaped flags, called koinobori, are flown to represent the strength and growth of children). They also hold a spiritual significance in Buddhism, symbolizing transformation and rebirth.
