Casa Mancos_ 2022/2023

This project was born from the dream of a young couple with a child, seeking a simpler, slower-paced life in the countryside. They envisioned a practical and comfortable home — not grand, but grounded — where they could enjoy the everyday pleasures of rural living, open skies, and time spent outdoors together.

The house was designed as a three-bedroom family home, shaped by a composition of three volumes forming an “L.” This layout naturally creates a protected outdoor space at the centre, where the family can gather, play, and relax by the pool — their own private courtyard surrounded by nature. To fit gently into the topography and respect the 10-metre building setback required by local regulations, the house is set at an intermediate level along the length of the plot. This positioning allowed the volumes to remain on the same plane, simplifying the interior connections and reinforcing the idea of ease and practicality.

The main social spaces — kitchen, dining, and living areas — are located in the first volume, oriented parallel to the eastern neighbour. Large sliding doors open to a generous porch overlooking the pool, extending the living space outdoors and inviting natural light throughout the day. A smaller, lower connector volume holds the technical functions, guest bathroom, and a small service yard. By slightly lowering its height, this space becomes more discreet, allowing the two main wings to remain visually dominant while maintaining a cohesive rhythm. Perpendicular to the others, the third volume contains the most private areas: the bedrooms and bathrooms. Its sloping roof gently shields the interior from the north and offers a sense of calm retreat at the end of the day.

Throughout the process, special care was taken to ensure the house would sit quietly in the landscape — both in scale and in expression. With its low profile and positioning below street level, the building is largely hidden from public view. Facades combine a soft green tone with natural wood cladding, allowing the house to blend seamlessly into the surrounding vegetation — more a part of the landscape than a statement upon it.

This home is not about excess or display. It’s about balance, warmth, and daily life — a quiet retreat for a family that values simplicity, connection, and the peaceful rhythm of living close to nature.

São Brás Residence

A large former stable, now in a state of disrepair, marked the starting point for this private residential project. The existing ruin possessed a unique atmosphere — somewhere between the rural and the industrial — which we sought to preserve and reinterpret. The aim was to transform this agricultural structure into a spacious single-family home, while maintaining its intrinsic character and reinforcing its relationship with the surrounding idyllic landscape.

Rather than expanding the building, the proposal intentionally reduces its built footprint. Parts of the roof were removed to create private outdoor patios for the bedrooms and a larger courtyard for the social areas. This gesture not only brings light and air into the heart of the house but also decreases the total gross floor area and construction index. The original volume and overall height were respected, maintaining the horizontal lines and proportion of the existing structure.

Subtle yet essential changes were introduced to the façades to enable the creation of brighter, healthier, and more functional interiors. Inside, the layout is organized into two distinct wings: to the south, a series of ten bedrooms are arranged along a central corridor. Each room is equipped with an en-suite bathroom and a private patio, offering both privacy and natural light.

To the north, the social spaces unfold around an internal courtyard, fostering a strong connection between the kitchen, dining, and living areas. A service block to the east links the main entrance to the kitchen through a secondary circulation route, integrating auxiliary spaces and a staircase leading down to a basement level with technical facilities.

Outside, the intervention focused on enhancing vehicular access from both ends of the plot through the introduction of a dry floor system to facilitate movement and access. In addition, a new solarium terrace with a swimming pool was proposed at the highest point of the site, offering panoramic views over the landscape.

As a whole, the project seeks to rehabilitate the building with care and intention, promoting a renewed and balanced relationship between architecture, memory, and land.
