Din Baia, Tulcea RO până la Paris Design Week.
Povestea noastră începe acum mai bine de 20 de ani, cu piatra naturală. Părinții mei lucrează cu calcarul extras din cariera noastră din Baia, Tulcea, de la extracție până la prelucrare.
În urmă cu doi ani, am decis să ducem experiența asta într-o direcție nouă și să începem să dezvoltăm împreună obiecte de design. De aici a început VAST CRAFT.
Au urmat doi ani de schițe, prototipuri, experimente, teste, lucruri care au funcționat, altele care nu au funcționat și foarte multe lucruri învățate pe parcurs.
Iar anul acesta, unul dintre obiectele rezultate din procesul ăsta a ajuns din atelierul nostru din Baia până la Paris Design Week.
L4040 a fost expus la La Gaîté Lyrique, în cadrul TOUT EST CHAOS, expoziție organizată de Pli Office.
L4040 a pornit de la contrastul dintre două materiale foarte diferite: calcarul, natural, brut și imperfect, și profilul de aluminiu extrudat, precis, clar și industrial. Între ele, elementele printate 3D fac legătura și devin parte din identitatea obiectului.
Să vedem unul dintre obiectele noastre plecând din atelier și ajungând expus la Paris a fost un moment foarte frumos și important pentru noi. Ne-a dat și mai mult chef să continuăm să experimentăm și să vedem unde putem duce VAST CRAFT mai departe.

From Baia, Tulcea to Paris Design Week.
More than 20 years ago, our story started with natural stone. My parents built their work around extracting and processing limestone from our quarry in Baia, Tulcea, Romania.
Two years ago, we decided to take that experience in a new direction. Their knowledge of stone met my background in architecture, design and digital fabrication, and slowly became VAST CRAFT.
After two years of prototypes, experiments, tests and learning along the way, L4040 became our first object exhibited during Paris Design Week, as part of TOUT EST CHAOS at La Gaîté Lyrique, organized by Pli Office.
The concept behind L4040 started with a simple contrast between two materials and two ways of making.
Limestone is natural, rough and unpredictable.
Extruded aluminium is precise, clean and industrial.
Custom 3D-printed components connect the two. Movement and functionality also became part of the design: the aluminium profile can be easily detached from the stone base without the cable and rotated to direct the light depending on the space. Even the on/off switch was developed as a small element with an identity of its own.
L4040 brings together many of the things we want to continue exploring through VAST CRAFT: natural and industrial materials, craft and technology, precision and imperfection. This relationship between direct material work and digital fabrication is central to how we are developing the studio.
After two years of making, testing and figuring things out along the way, seeing L4040 travel from our workshop in Baia to an exhibition in Paris was something very special.
