🇺🇸 DEAR U.S. CUSTOMERS, 🇺🇸

WE’RE FINALLY BACK.

After a long pause, Dark Tales is once again available in the United States through our wonderful U.S. retail partners, Polysnifferous (Jamie and Noah) and Stéle (Stéle).

This means you can once again discover and order a selection of Dark Tales and Villaniflōr perfumes directly within the USA.

Polysnifferous is now carrying Dark Tales updated stateside, making it much easier to return to old favorites, discover something new, or finally try the fragrances that have been waiting on your wishlist.

Their selection will continue to grow, including upcoming Halloween and Christmas limited editions, with more releases joining the collection throughout the year.

And there is more coming to New York.

Our new retail partner Stéle has curated a selection of Dark Tales and Villaniflōr perfumes that will soon be available to discover in person at their two boutiques in New York — NoLita and Williamsburg.

The collection is currently being prepared for Stéle and will be available in September.

But then again… are there really accidents? 🌙🧹

Let’s talk about batch differences in natural perfumery, or in perfumes built with a high percentage of natural materials.

It’s no secret that our perfumes are largely botanical in composition, usually around 70-100% natural materials depending on the scent: essential oils, absolutes, CO₂ extracts, concretes, waxes, resins and more. Aroma molecules are used mostly for toning, shading, improving structure, or creating notes that simply don’t exist as natural perfumery materials.

So why can the same perfume smell slightly different from one batch to another? Aren’t we following exactly the same formula every time?

We are. The formula stays the same. The materials don’t.

Synthetic aroma molecules can usually be produced with a very high level of consistency. Naturals are another story entirely.

Think of wine, coffee, tea or even fruit. The same grape variety grown in the same region can taste slightly different from one harvest to the next. Botanical perfumery materials behave in much the same way.

The scent of an essential oil or absolute can be influenced by countless tiny variables: the region where the plant was grown, weather during the season, rainfall, temperature, soil, the exact moment of harvesting, the condition of the plants, extraction methods, processing techniques and even subtle differences between productions from the same supplier.

Sometimes these variations are barely perceptible. Sometimes a certain facet becomes a little greener, darker, sweeter, smokier or more floral.

And that is part of the beauty of working with nature. Nature does not manufacture identical copies of itself. Each harvest carries a little fingerprint of the place and moment it came from, and occasionally that fingerprint becomes visible in the finished perfume.

There is another important factor too: maturation.

A freshly blended perfume is still finding its balance. During the first weeks and months, materials continue integrating, sharper edges soften, heavier notes settle into the structure and the composition becomes increasingly cohesive. In our experience, a new batch can continue shifting noticeably for up to around three months, and subtler evolution may continue far beyond that.

This means that a sample poured from a batch blended several months ago, or even a year ago, may smell somewhat different beside a bottle from a freshly matured batch, despite being made from exactly the same formula.

We like to think of perfume a little like wine: it is alive in the bottle, and time is one of its ingredients.

So when you notice tiny differences between batches of a natural-heavy perfume, you are not necessarily experiencing inconsistency. Sometimes you are simply smelling the nature of the materials themselves.

A little unpredictability. A little individuality.

And perhaps… a little accidental witchcraft. ✨

After navigating the new PPWR and EPR requirements, we have made a temporary decision regarding our EU markets.

MARKETS WE KEEP OPEN:
Sweden, Austria, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Netherlands, Poland and Spain.

MARKETS WE WILL CLOSE FROM 23 AUGUST:
Belgium, Bulgaria*, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Luxembourg, Malta, Portugal, Romania**, Slovakia and Slovenia.

*We have an upcoming retail partner in Bulgaria - BOTESTO - where a selected range of Dark Tales perfumes will soon become available.

WHY UNTIL OCTOBER?
EU discussions regarding EPR requirements are still ongoing, with another major discussion expected in October. Depending on the outcome, the rules may be clarified or softened, or remain as they are. This will determine whether we can reopen these markets.

Because our decision came rather late, we are giving customers in affected countries ONE FINAL WEEK TO ORDER.
🖤 Shipping remains open until 23 August.

As enforcement for independent brands appears to have shifted from an immediate fine toward an initial warning, we have decided to give you this extra week at our own risk.

We know how chaotic and sudden this situation has been, and we did not want to close these markets overnight without giving you one final opportunity to order your favourites.

Please read the slides 💔
We don’t have the final list of countries where we will manage to keep direct shipping, and where not. This will take quite some time to figure out all registrations, and see if we can comply to the local requirements. So we don’t have the exact answers yet. These PPWR and EPR and a mandatory authorized representative are a total mess on top of it.
But we will do our best to fight through this labyrinth and be full-scale back on the horse, one way or another.
