The green house that survived Nepal’s devastating floods. 🏠

While everything around it was swept away, this house remained standing. Thanks to its reinforced concrete structure, solid foundation and, importantly, its location just outside the worst path of the debris flow.

A striking reminder that in disasters, WHERE we build can matter just as much as HOW we build.

Unfortunately, there are always such bad apples (害群之马) but it's not limited to renovation industry only. Crooks can be from anywhere. Consumers gotta be alert and do due diligence.

An interior designer in Singapore was arrested for allegedly cheating clients of over $100,000 through a direct payment scheme for renovation services. Read more at straitstimes.com. Read more at straitstimes.com.

Major earthquakes can affect Southeast Asia sea-level projections: Study | NTU Singapore https://share.google/uRdGSMNYusffWbayb

Major tremors off Sumatra, such as the 9.2 magnitude earthquake in 2004, have caused land to shift and sink in Singapore over the decades.

In the long run, sinking land can lead to rising sea levels and increasing flood risks.

This was revealed in a recent study by scientists from Nanyang Technological University (NTU), published in Communications Earth & Environment.

Studying up to two decades of ground movement data from Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand, the team found that the ground continued to move in these places long after earthquakes more than 600km away.

If such movements are not accounted for in studies of sea-level rise, flood risks in low-lying areas could be underestimated, NTU said in a news release.

Are home stylists or decorators really in demand in SG? Many home owners are self-proclaimed designers, will they appreciate the works of home stylists?

But I bet many proud homeowners will love to offer their homes for rental to do photo shootings.

From styling homes to painting murals, creating social media content to hosting film crews, creative HDB homeowners in Singapore are finding new ways to turn their eye for design into income-generating projects.

This headline got me thinking.

We've all seen reports of monkeys wandering into homes—even high-rise HDB flats, particularly in newer estates like Punggol. I've also noticed wild birds becoming far less wary of humans, flying into shopping malls and eateries in search of food.

These aren't just random encounters. As forests and natural habitats shrink, wildlife has fewer places to live and forage, forcing them to venture into human spaces to survive.

This is the trade-off that comes with every new housing estate.

Green facades, rooftop gardens and tree planting can help reduce some of the environmental impact, but they cannot replace the ecological value of a mature forest. Once a forest is fragmented, biodiversity declines, wildlife movement is disrupted, and the natural cooling effect that forests provide is diminished.

In a land-scarce city like Singapore, the need for more homes is real. But every new development comes at a cost. As we make more room for ourselves, nature inevitably gives up some of its space.

Progress always demands trade-offs, and ultimately, it is we humans who will have to live with the consequences of those choices.

Cookie-cutter malls aren't just a retail problem. They're an urban design problem.

When every mall offers the same layout, the same brands and the same experience, cities lose their sense of place. Safe leasing decisions may maximise returns, but they also squeeze out local character, independent businesses and vibrant community life.

A great city isn't built on repetition. It's built on destinations that inspire people to gather, linger and return—not just places that serve everyday convenience.

Why do some malls thrive while others struggle? CNA explores whether there is an oversupply and if shopping centres are just starting to look alike.
