A fall can happen in seconds. Recovering the confidence to move safely at home again takes a lot more.

When Mr K’s father suffered a hairline hip fracture from a fall, he didn’t just want his father to heal — he wanted to make sure it wouldn’t happen again. That meant looking closely at where falls are most common: the bathroom.

We assessed two homes — Mr K’s own home at The Arte, and his parents’ HDB flat in Choa Chu Kang — and carried out targeted accessibility works at each:

🔹 The Arte: Grab bars installed in both the common and bedroom bathrooms
🔹 Choa Chu Kang: Grab bars in both bathrooms, plus shower screens removed and replaced with shower curtains for easier, obstacle-free access

No major renovation. No months of disruption. Just focused improvements that gave one family real peace of mind — and gave Mr K’s father back his confidence to move around his own home.

This is what ageing-in-place design looks like in practice: small, considered changes with outsized impact on safety and independence.

In our final post for Parkinson’s Awareness Month, we want to talk about the riskiest room in any elderly person’s home: the bathroom. 🛁🚽

For someone with Parkinson’s, the bathroom stacks every challenge together - wet surfaces, confined space, the need to turn, bend, grip and transfer - all while managing tremor, stiffness or reduced balance.

Falls in the bathroom account for a significant proportion of serious injuries among the elderly in Singapore. 🤕

At Oak Spring, a bathroom designed for Parkinson’s looks like this:

✅ Zero-entry shower (no step, no curb)
✅ Fold-down shower seat
✅ Grab bars positioned by a specialist — height, angle, and placement
✅ Non-slip, matte tiles or vinyl
✅ Single-lever mixer tap at the basin
✅ Outward-opening or sliding bathroom door

Designing for Parkinson’s 🎗️ (series 3)

Most people think lighting is about ambience. In a home designed for someone with Parkinson’s, it’s about safety.

Parkinson’s affects visual processing. Shadows, glare and poor contrast can be disorienting — and for someone whose balance is already compromised, a moment of confusion in a dim corridor at 3am is a fall waiting to happen.

Parkinson’s also affects sleep, meaning night-time movement is common. The path from the bedroom to the bathroom becomes one of the highest-risk journeys in the home.

How we design for this:

💡 No harsh downlights that create strong shadow pools on the floor
💡 Continuous, even ambient lighting in corridors — with no dark gaps
💡 Motion-activated night lights at floor level, along the bedroom-to-bathroom route
💡 Matte, low-glare finishes on floors and walls — glare creates visual confusion
💡 Strong tonal contrast at key edges (e.g. where the floor meets a step, or a door frame meets a wall) — this helps the brain read space correctly

Lighting isn’t just décor. In the right design, it’s direction.

Continuing this month’s series on Designing for Parkinson’s. 🎗️🩶

One of the least understood symptoms of Parkinson’s is “freezing of gait” — when a person’s feet suddenly feel locked to the ground, mid-step. It affects up to 50% of those with Parkinson’s and is one of the leading causes of falls.

⚠️ What triggers it? Doorways. Narrow corridors. Cluttered spaces. Sharp turns. Any perceived tightening of the path ahead can cause a freeze.

This is where floor plan decisions become life-changing. 💭

At Oak Spring, when we design for clients at risk of or living with Parkinson’s, we plan specifically for this:

🚶🏻‍♂️ Wide, open corridors: unobstructed straight-line movement
🚶🏻‍♂️ Eliminating unnecessary doorways between key spaces: the kitchen, bedroom and bathroom
🚶🏻‍♂️ Visual floor cues: subtle contrasting strips at key transition points to prompt the brain to keep stepping
🚶🏻‍♂️ Furniture placement that creates clear pathways
🚶🏻‍♂️ Removing rugs, thresholds and any surface changes that break the visual field

A well-designed home tells the body what to do next. For someone with Parkinson’s, that quiet guidance can mean the difference between independence and a fall.

A round k**b requires grip, rotation and pressure. A thin drawer pull demands pinching. A lever tap with force needs sustained hold. For someone living with tremor, these aren’t minor frustrations — they’re daily negotiations with independence.

So when we design for clients with Parkinson’s or Parkinson’s risk, we rethink every contact point in the home. Lever handles over round k**bs. D-pull drawer hardware. Motion-sensor taps. Rocker-style light switches.
