Friday confession from our founder: Match & Stitch did not begin with a database. It began with beads.

Miyuki Delica was the first real creative rabbit hole. The shape, color range, and finishes made "I'll choose one" a very optimistic plan.

Then came haute couture embroidery, where beads, sequins, and thread could all share the same piece. That raised a practical question: how do you choose a bead to pair with DMC or Anchor thread when color is only part of the answer? Matte softens it. Metallic adds light. Rainbow changes with the angle. Picasso brings mottled variation.

That question helped shape Match & Stitch.

On Friday, there was no sales pitch. What material started your creative rabbit hole: thread, beads, fabric, clay, or something else?

Would you rather a conversion tool say "no exact match" or quietly give you something close?

We started Match & Stitch's DMC-to-Anchor matching work with the slow method: physical skeins side by side, checked against shade cards produced by each brand in natural daylight. Those comparisons made one thing clear. Some colors simply do not have a true equivalent in the other brand.

A near match can still be useful, but only if it is clearly labeled as such. We would rather show the closest option and tell you that the difference is visible than pretend two shades are identical.

When you switch thread brands, which difference bothers you most: hue, depth, or undertone?

Suppose you wanted this exact coral for a brooch. What would you type into a search box?

"Pink" is too broad. "Orange" misses the softness. A product number works only if you already know it.

This is the problem behind Search by Poetic Colour Name in Match & Stitch. We have added descriptive tags to supported DMC and Anchor threads and Miyuki Delica beads, so a search can begin with ordinary language such as warm gray, dusty green, cranberry, or fire. The feature is also intended to explore words connected to a mood or feeling.

An exact color match is not always possible - and sometimes it is not the most interesting choice.

Miyuki Delica beads can combine color with metallic, silver-lined, luminous, rainbow, or textured effects. A DMC or Anchor thread is usually one solid color. Some bead finishes simply cannot be reproduced by a single thread shade.

That challenge led us to create Creative Match. When it appears in Match & Stitch results, the suggested bead is not an exact color match. It is selected to work harmoniously with the thread and add contrast, depth, or light.

We expected dependable color-matching data to be available. When we checked the sources against real materials, it often was not.

Conversion websites, a specialist book, and manufacturer resources disagreed with each other and with the actual threads. The biggest gap was thread-to-bead matching: we found about 30 suggestions across more than 1,200 bead colors and finishes.

So we began building our own database.

A colorimeter gave us controlled readings for DMC and Anchor threads. Miyuki Delica beads needed physical comparison because glass and finish change how they reflect light. We matched them with thread one by one.

Four months later, the database is almost complete. One matching scenario required a separate mode, which we will cover in the next post.

Why is Match & Stitch starting with Miyuki Delica, but not Toho?

Our first plan was to cover DMC and Anchor threads alongside both Miyuki Delica and Toho beads. Then we mapped the scale.

DMC's core embroidery-floss range is around 500 shades. Anchor lists 444 solid colors before its ombre and multicolor ranges. The bead catalogs add many more color-and-finish combinations.
Finish adds another challenge: a transparent, metallic or lined bead can look very different as the light changes, even when the base color seems similar.

So we made a deliberate choice: start with DMC, Anchor and Miyuki Delica.

The decision was both practical and personal: Miyuki Delica is the bead range I use most in my own embroidery and jewelry work. Even with this narrower scope, comparing and matching the three ranges took more than four months.

We hope to add Toho later. First, we would rather build a focused system carefully than include everything too quickly. In the next post, we will show more of the matching process itself.

Match & Stitch began with an amaryllis.

A client asked me to add floral embroidery to a dress that felt a little too plain. We chose an amaryllis, and I began preparing a digital preview so she could see the direction before I stitched.
The motif was clear. The colors were not.

I work with DMC threads and Miyuki Delica beads, but I could not find dependable digital color references that reflected the materials in front of me. Online information often disagreed with the real threads and beads. When I ordered extra beads to coordinate with the floss, several arrived in shades far from what I needed.

Anyone who has matched materials across brands knows how much finish, light and screen settings can change what we see. Hours can disappear into comparing, ordering and second-guessing.

That frustration became the starting point for Match & Stitch: a tool we are building to help embroiderers and beaders find threads and beads that work together with less guesswork and fewer wrong purchases.
