STEP 1: What is GED?
“GED stands for General Educational Development.
It is a U.S. high school equivalency credential that is recognized by many universities, colleges, and employers in the United States and some other countries, depending on institutional policies.
In simple words, the GED is an alternative to a traditional high school diploma, earned by passing standardized exams rather than attending high school.”
Importantly, it is a computer based test as well.
STEP 2: Brief History of GED
“The GED was developed in the United States in 1942 by the American Council on Education.
It was created to help people who could not finish high school, especially soldiers returning from World War II who had left school to serve their country.
Many of them wanted to continue their education or enter the workforce but did not have a high school diploma.To address this, a high school equivalency exam called the GED was created.
Today, the GED is widely accepted for university admission, college programs, and employment in the United States and many other countries, depending on institutional policies.”
STEP 3: Subjects in GED (4 Subjects)
GED has four subjects:
📘 1. Reasoning Through Language Arts (RLA)
Reading comprehension
Writing & grammar (includes one essay, extended respond)
Exam duration: 2 hours 30 minutes
📗 2. Mathematical Reasoning
Basic math, algebra, graphs
Calculator allowed for most questions, theory and formula sheet are provided
Exam duration: 1 hour 55 minutes
📙 3. Science
Life science, physical science, earth & space science
Focus on data and scientific reasoning, experiment
Exam duration: 1 hour 30 minutes
📕 4. Social Studies
Civics, U.S. history, geography, economics
Exam duration: 1 hour 10 minutes
STEP 4: GED Exam Style
“The GED exam is a computer-based test and you have to go and take the exam at test centers near your location.
Multiple choice, drag and drop, fill in the blank
Short answers
Extended response (essay in RLA)
Time-limited exams
“You don’t need to memorize everything.
GED tests understanding, critical thinking, logical thinking, analyzing, and background knowledge.
You need to take the ready test first, after you pass all subjects of the ready test, you can book for the real official test. If you fail a subject, you can retake that subject.
The full score for each subject is 200 and you must get 145 to pass.

STEP 5: GED Exam Fee
“The exam fee depends on the country and test center.”
You usually pay per subject
You don’t need to pay all at once
For most international test centers, the ready test is 7.99 USD for each subject (25.99 USD total) and the official test is 85 USD for each subject (340 USD).
