The Philosophy and Origins of the ETNOS U Style

Nataliia Gogolieva:

“It all began with a realization: around the world, Petrykivka painting is often perceived as part of Russian culture due to the legacy of the Soviet era. That is why it became important for me to promote it as Ukrainian art and to show its true origins.

I started working on this idea back in 2020. After the beginning of the full-scale war, it became a personal mission — to preserve and promote Ukraine’s cultural heritage through contemporary design and art.

The first project was called JYTTIA (LIFE). To me, it symbolizes the most precious thing we have. Its central message is simple: Ukraine lives. And after even the darkest times, the day will come when peaceful skies return above Ukraine, and life will bloom again as brightly as the flowers of Petrykivka painting.”

The core idea of ETNOS U:

Ukrainian culture does not belong to the past. It lives today, continues to evolve, inspire, and shape the future.

Through contemporary design, we bring the authentic story of Ukrainian heritage back to the world and create spaces where life can truly be felt.

In 2013, Petrykivka painting was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

At ENGI DESIGN STUDIO, we incorporate elements of Petrykivka into modern design — both in our interior projects and in the JYTTIA Kvitka collection. It’s our way of showing that tradition can be part of a contemporary space — looking natural and beautiful.

ETNOS U was born out of respect for Ukrainian craftsmen, artists, architects, artisans, and the generations who have shaped our culture over centuries.

We see Ukrainian art not as a museum exhibit, but as a living language capable of speaking to the modern world.

Every ornament carries meaning.

Every texture holds memory.

Every space has a soul.

The Sun lamp combines contemporary design with references to Ukrainian culture, bringing a distinctive character to a space through its expressive form and thoughtful craftsmanship.

Its asymmetrical bionic shape and 600 mm diameter make it a noticeable interior element that works both as a source of light and as a design object, adding individuality and atmosphere to modern interiors.
