Far beyond Neptune, something massive may be shaping our solar system.
On January 20, 2016, astronomers Konstantin Batygin and Mike Brown published a groundbreaking paper proposing the existence of a ninth planet—far beyond Neptune—in the outer reaches of our solar system. Dubbed “Planet Nine,” this hypothetical world could be 10 times more massive than Earth and orbit the Sun once every 10,000 to 20,000 years.
The evidence? A cluster of distant Kuiper Belt Objects (KBOs) showed highly unusual, aligned orbits that couldn’t be explained by chance or by the gravity of the known planets alone. Batygin and Brown ran simulations that revealed the best explanation: a massive, unseen planet shepherding these icy objects into their strange paths.
If confirmed, Planet Nine would reshape our understanding of the solar system’s structure, evolution, and the lingering possibility of undiscovered worlds. It may also explain the tilt of the solar system’s orbital plane and the strange behavior of other distant bodies.
As of today, Planet Nine remains undetected—but telescopes around the world continue to search for it.
