The Classic American Cheeseburger
A staple of American summer grilling, this recipe focuses on a juicy, flavorful beef patty with a simple, classic topping.
Prep time: 15 minutes
Cook time: 10 minutes
Servings: 4
Ingredients
For the Patties:
1.5 lbs (680g) ground beef (80% lean / 20% fat is recommended for flavor and juiciness)
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
1/2 tsp garlic powder (optional)
For Assembly:
4 burger buns (brioche or sesame are classics)
4 slices of American cheese (or cheddar, swiss, etc.)
1 tbsp butter (for toasting buns)
Optional Toppings:
Lettuce leaves
Tomato slices
Red onion slices
Pickles
Ketchup, Mustard, Mayo
Instructions
Form the Patties: Gently divide the ground beef into four equal portions. Form each into a ball, then flatten into a patty about 3/4-inch thick. Make a small, shallow indent with your thumb in the center of each patty (this prevents it from doming while cooking).
Season: Just before cooking, generously season both sides of each patty with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
Prepare the Buns: While the pan or grill heats, spread a little butter on the cut sides of the buns. In a skillet over medium heat, toast the buns, cut-side down, until golden brown and crisp (about 1-2 minutes). Set aside.
Cook the Patties:
On a Grill: Preheat your grill to high. Place patties on the grate. Cook for 3-4 minutes. Flip and cook for another 3-4 minutes (for medium-rare) or to your desired doneness.
In a Skillet: Heat a cast-iron skillet or heavy pan over medium-high heat. Add patties (you may need to do this in batches). Cook for 3-4 minutes until a nice crust forms. Flip and cook for another 3-4 minutes.
Melt the Cheese: About 1 minute before the burgers are done, place a slice of cheese on each patty. If using a pan, you can cover it with a lid to speed up the melting.
Assemble: Place the cheesy patty on the bottom bun. Add your desired toppings and sauces, then top with the other bun half. Serve immediately.
