Last night she finally got the first coat of sealer on her table and this evening put on a top coat and buffed it out. So I think she is ready to call it complete.

This project was a struggle due to the boards she chose. She stuck with it and had to crisis manage, but she saw it through in time for showcase at the school on the 9th and Beta state on the 17th. Hopefully she places as well as she did last year.

Yesterday was pour day. For Abby.

This is her senior year Beta project. This time she is making a dining table out of ash with samurai black epoxy and ash live edge boards.

Tonight she got to take the weights off and get a better look at what it’s going to look like. She hopes to take it out of the mould this weekend and get a better idea of how it’s going to turn out.

We have been working on her next project.

She is working on flattening her board using the router sled we built. It takes the warps and twists out of her boards and makes them perfectly flat on both sides.

She really likes making sawdust.

Abigail entered her table in the Visual Arts Woodworking contest at Missouri State Beta Club today for judging.

There were so many awesome entries.

We are so proud of her and how hard she worked on her project.

Stay tuned!

Yesterday afternoon, she finally finished her table.

After cleaning up the base, she marked and drilled the base then drilled her board for the inserts and Bolte’s it all together to make sure it fits. Then after a couple coats of pads not on the base, she put it all together again to see the final product.

Pictures do this project no justice!

Next stop, state BETA club in early March to compete with projects from all over the state.

We hope the judges like it as much as we love it!

Yesterday evening she de-molded her table. We just finished running it through the flattening mill.

Next up sanding and polish.

She is moving her project along, the goal is to have it complete in time to take it to State in Beta club.

It’s been about 30 hours since she poured, so the resin has set up enough that she could pull the weights off and get a look at the final patern.

Resin is like water and the boards will float if you don’t keep weights on them until the resin starts to set up.

As the resin cures, there is an exothermic chemical reaction that causes the resin and coloring pigments to do a slow boil, which makes every pour unique in the color patern.

In about another 72 hours she will be able to remove the mold. After about another week it should be completely cured and she can start trimming, flattening and sanding.

Her newest board fresh out of the mold and throgh the planner. Some maple pairs well with Baku Red Eye Candy mica powder.

Still needs sanded, polished and oiled. It’s a very slow process but she does great work and has an awesome eye for her craft.

As always big thanks to Dan Downing for having awesome lumber.

Two boards Abby has been working on.

The ocean themed board she started the week before Thanksgiving. This was the first time doing a shallow pour with objects in the pour. The Okinawa blue pigment really pops well and she did a great job buffing out the top coat to get it crystal clear. The purple board is hard to get a good picture but it’s really sharp as well.

Tonight at the annual AshGrove FFA Hog RAffle and pie auction, Abigail has submitted a National Blue and Corn Gold board with a pair of matching stemware holders for auction. She worked really hard on these. Every board is different, it’s always interesting to see how the color patterns cure.
