This week, we had our last Raider Banquet for Keaton, and it just hit me how far he has come. He went from a kid who had literally been talked into his very first competition at Lumpkin County by his buddies, where he turned green in the face from a kid who was out of shape, to a young man who now even trains in the off-season for fun.
His physical growth has been amazing, but his mental growth is what stands out if you knew him through the years. He went from doubting himself to believing he can take on any wall or obstacle life puts in front of him. And he believes that as a team, anything can be overcome.
What makes me happy is that his team voted him to be their Captain again this year, and how he sees potential in others and tries to bring out the best in them. He would always remind them that everyone starts somewhere, just like he did. For him, when he started Raiders, it used to be solely about the win, which of course, is always fun. Now, he’s finally matured enough to know it’s not just about winning at these comps, but about the purpose behind the comps, growing together while you all make mistakes and learn from them, and showing up for each other as a team. To compete against yourself to be “1% better every day” and work towards continuous improvement, b/c then you always win, no matter the circumstances. When cadets were down on themselves for underperformance, I’d see him turn their whole demeanor around when he would point out how much they’ve improved in XYZ, and they should be proud of themselves for that. As a mom, it’s cool to see he’s finally gotten it.
He has pushed through injuries, competed with two different schools, and grown every single year. As this chapter closes, I’m just thankful for the experiences that shaped him and the young man he is becoming. I’m also thankful for not having to wake up at 4:45am to go to all-day comps that last until sometimes 6p in every weather condition, and then have to drive home. We gladly pass that torch to the next season of Raider parents. May the odds be ever in your favor! lol 🤣🤫
Good job, Keaton, we love ya bud! Pics attached through the seasons.
