We have the power to choose what we do. I am free to choose, for example, whether to jump from the roof of my house. But­ here’s the thing: if I jump, I am not free to choose what happens next. I can’t choose not to fall. I can’t choose not to hit the ground hard. I can’t choose whether or not I will break my leg—or my neck. Once I go airborne, those things are out of my hands. The only way to avoid any of the unpleasant results of jumping is … not to jump.
