It's an absolute stunner of a day in Downtown Cedartown! Sun's shining and we've got a nice breeze going. If you get the chance, stop by and visit some of our shops in person. If you can't get out today, we can bring a little downtown to you right now.
We hope you enjoy reading this latest feature from one of our 300 block businesses. Their main parking lot is currently under construction, but not to worry -- you’ll be able to find a place to park. Enjoy a little fresh air and some of our beautiful architecture along Main Street.
Nearly 20 years ago, Hal Floyd pinned his hopes and dreams on a distinctive jade-colored building in the heart of Downtown Cedartown and took a risk.
Raised as a small-town kid, Hal left Cedartown not long after graduating from high school. He traded the green pastures surrounding his childhood home for the bright lights and concrete canyons of cities like Atlanta and New York. Soaking it all in, Hal honed his skills in the hair and beauty industry by studying under leading professionals. It wasn’t long before he found success of his own, making his mark in Atlanta for several years. Still, Atlanta was never truly home.
And so the kid who once couldn’t wait to leave town after tossing his cap and tassel in the air eventually put the big city skyline in his rearview mirror and headed back home.
At the time, his parents were getting older, and his desire to be closer to them guided his decision. That desire, however, didn’t extinguish his ambition to continue his career in the beauty industry.
That’s where the risk came in. Back home and settled in, Hal made the decision to open his own business.
On December 7, 2007, FHF Hair Design officially opened its doors. Since then, the salon has seen a constant stream of clientele. Many local residents make up his customer base, while others travel hours for an appointment. Hal offers a welcoming environment for everyone, whether new or long-time clients.
“The best part of owning and running this salon, and providing the services that we offer, is the ability to make someone’s day,” Hal said with a smile. “I just love that a client can come in, maybe not in the best mood or having a bad day, and by the time they’re ready to leave, they’re smiling, feeling positive, and better about themselves. That’s what I love.”
Hal has always believed that helping clients leave in a better mood is part of the experience. He and his staff stay educated and trained on the latest industry trends and techniques, allowing them to consistently deliver top-notch results. On tap in the next few weeks is a salon staff training with a Redken Professional Hair Care representative. The training will cover the newest color technique designed to create sun-kissed results with seamless, natural-looking grow out.
Most recently, Hal has brought in a licensed massage therapist and will soon add a dedicated room for esthetic services such as facials and waxing. His team of hair care professionals includes specialties in cuts, styling, coloring, perms, and naturally curly hair, as well as bilingual service to better serve a diverse client base.
Giving back to the community that raised him has always been a priority for Hal. He remains deeply involved in local outreach efforts, like providing free back-to-school haircuts and supplies each year, hosting an annual toy drive for children in the foster care system, organizing a “Give Your Beauty Back” drive for cosmetics and personal care items benefiting the local domestic violence shelter, and offering the salon’s parking lot each October for an affordable, licensed mobile mammogram unit to promote breast cancer prevention and early detection.
Community initiatives, salon specials, and promotions are regularly shared through the salon’s social media platforms, where both new and returning clients can stay connected. Most recently, the salon introduced a client referral incentive program. Established clients can cash in on a discount for referring new clients, and the new client also enjoys a discount as well.
Hal explained that lately, he feels a renewed sense of connection as a Downtown Cedartown business owner.
“I have really enjoyed partnering with my Main Street neighbors,” he said. “I feel like we’re communicating more and getting on the same page. It’s easy to call a neighbor and say, ‘I’m planning this for Mother’s Day,’ or ‘I’m running this special—do you want to partner and do something similar?’ That’s something I want to see continue to grow.”
The risk Hal took years ago has paid off—not only in the success of his business, but also in the relationships he has built along the way.
His parents, both now passed, instilled in him a strong work ethic that continues to guide him today. “My parents always taught me to give my very best,” Hal said. “That’s what I try to do every day here at the salon and for my clients.”
