Five pounds of apples go into the crockpot.

By the end, you can spread them on toast.

CROCKPOT APPLE BUTTER 🍎

Add 5 lb peeled, cored and sliced apples to the slow cooker with 1 cup apple c***r, 1 cup packed brown sugar, 2 teaspoons cinnamon, ½ teaspoon nutmeg, ¼ teaspoon cloves and ¼ teaspoon salt. Cook on LOW about 8 hours until the apples practically collapse. Blend until completely smooth, then stir in 1 tablespoon lemon juice and 1 teaspoon vanilla. Leave the lid off and continue cooking until it turns dark, glossy and thick enough to hold its shape on a spoon.

That last uncovered stretch is where applesauce stops being applesauce.

The color deepens. The flavor concentrates. The whole crockpot starts smelling like cinnamon and cooked apples.

And five pounds suddenly looks like a surprisingly small amount.
