Leroy is an all-star whistler. He whistles while he trims the hedges. He whistles while he tinkers in the garage, when he cooks his supper. And he whistles a tune when he drives his old truck with his arm out the window. He also farts a lot, no matter who’s around. And tells his grandkids they ought to be grateful for minimum wage and what the bible says about the “homosexuls.”

Barb had seen this “table-scaping” in her magazines but had never experienced it in real life. Having coffee at Janice’s house, she struggled to maintain polite facial muscles as she navigated moss and stupid knickknacks, to try and find a place to put down her cup.

Last night I was wiping the stain layer off these mugs while on the phone with my daughters. I mentioned what I was doing at some point in the conversation and they said, “we know.” They recognized the sound of the sponge rubbing against the bisque fired clay.. 🤯 How many people in the world would be able to identify that sound? Sometimes I picture the smells and sounds that accompany their childhoods because of this part of my life. I get drunk on the magic of it.
