I have taken almost a year thinking about what I wanted to say in a post like I am about to write. And as I sit in my studio today working on a commission, I think I am finally ready to put this out there.
I am a small business. Customers either find me by word of mouth or by my Facebook posts which allows me to share the custom art work I do. Custom. That is an important word here. I usually spend just as much time planning my art as I do painting because I am not creating things for myself, I create what others come to me and ask for. The art I am asked to create belongs to them. I have been painting megaphones for almost 10 years now and I know my designs will be echoed in others who are doing the same thing in our community. And I'm ok with that to a degree. The truth is very little of what I do is entirely original. That being said, when I spend an hour meeting with a person discussing their favorite things, things that have been meaningful to them, part of what I am being paid for is to take those ideas and put them together in an original way. When a megaphone that I paint is duplicated for another person by another artist that takes away from the experience for that person I created the art work for. It takes away from me, that I was paid to create a one-of-a-kind custom item and spent hours planning it then to see it on some one else's megaphone. So. Please. When you see my posts, admire them. Even better like them. But please, do not copy/reproduce my work. It is just not fair to anyone involved.
Thank you for your support. I would not still be here doing what I love for this community without all those who continue to come back and tell others about me.
