To say you’re an artist with confidence takes time and self awareness. And we so often compare ourselves to those fine artists who have one main passion that they focus on and become experts on. Some have education and some are self taught. We admire them greatly! Their dedication, knowledge, talent, and self expression are amazing.
Many of us have dabbled in art at different times of life and are quite pleased with what we have created. You may be a dilettante (dabbler) or a renaissance person(also called polymath) having mastered multiple skills. One FB page calls a person who dabbles a Hobby Hoe. I appreciate them validating those of us who tend to enjoy the experience of trying new things and also find joy in collecting an inventory for different projects whether we use them or not.
Let’s see, for me there was sewing curtain, pillows, and Christmas decorations, quilting (kind of), beading, jewelry making, crocheting, scrapbooking, ceramics, calligraphy, harmonica and bongo playing, framed jewelry designs, distressing or painting furniture, painted wine glasses, growing and drying herbs, playing hand bells, piano playing, singing and mosaics. I’d say I probably fit into the combined renaissance/dilettante category. Isn’t life about experimenting and trying new things?
Whether you think of yourself as more of an engineer or a fitness person, the arts help us all tap into a different part of us that makes us whole. Think of art as warm up exercises to help you be your best self. Art is about expressing your unique perspective in a way that transcends words. Art is what makes us human and some would say, like God because he created.
Any of you that are still reading, feel free to reply with ways that art brought you comfort, healing, closeness to others, mental clarity, or sense of joy!
