I've never believed cleanliness had much to do with money.

I've seen people with very little take incredible pride in themselves and their surroundings.

And I've seen people with plenty of money who couldn't be bothered to take care of either.

It's not about having the nicest house.

It's not about expensive clothes.

It's not about what you can afford.

It's about taking care of what you have.

Take a shower.
Put on clean clothes.
Clean your space.
Take care of your stuff.

Not because somebody else is watching.

Because you are worth taking care of.

We get pretty good at surviving things.

We go back to work.

We take the next call.

We handle the next problem.

We tell ourselves we're fine.

But the things we don't deal with don't just disappear.

Sometimes they come out as anger.

Sometimes they show up in our relationships.

Sometimes they change the way we see ourselves.

And sometimes the people who get hurt by what we're carrying had absolutely nothing to do with where it came from.

The wounds you don't deal with eventually start bleeding onto people who never cut you.

That's a hard truth.

But recognizing it is where the work starts.

The fastest way to destroy a new EMT isn't criticism. It's humiliation.

New EMTs and paramedic students are learning a job that can be intimidating as hell. They need correction. They need accountability. They need someone willing to tell them when they screwed something up.

But they don't need to be humiliated for it.

Preceptors have an enormous influence on the next generation of EMS providers. What you say to a new student can stick with them for years.

We were all new once.

Remember what that felt like.

Your family doesn't have to understand EMS to know something has changed.

They may not understand the calls you've run.

They may not know the medical terms or the chaos you deal with.

But they'll notice when you stop laughing.

When you're always irritated.

When you're physically present but emotionally somewhere else.

Sometimes the people closest to us see our drift before we do.

If you're a first responder, don't dismiss what your family is trying to tell you. They may be seeing something you've been too busy—or too numb—to recognize.

We've confused being unbreakable with being healthy.

There's a difference.

No one ever told me PTSD could look like anger.

For years, I thought PTSD had to look like panic attacks, nightmares, or reliving traumatic calls.

Instead, it looked like being irritated all the time.

Losing my patience.

Pushing people away.

Becoming someone I barely recognized.

If you're a first responder, you know that trauma doesn't always show up the way people expect. Sometimes the people closest to us notice the change before we do.
