A chair, halfway there.

Before it becomes the piece you pull up to the table, it’s a frame, a spool of cord, and a pair of hands that know exactly what to do next.

This part doesn’t happen quickly. That’s the point.

Before the furniture, there is the forest.

What began as cattle pasture in southern Nicaragua is now a growing forest—more than 270,000 trees across the farms managed by Noel and Bryan Lopez and their team.

We sat down with them to talk about what it really takes to grow a forest: years of care, patience, knowledge, and a commitment to letting the land recover in its own time.

Because the story of a piece of furniture doesn’t begin in the workshop. It begins much earlier, with a seed in the soil.

Sustainable is a word that has stopped meaning much.

Slow design felt like a more honest place to start, partly because it asks something of the buyer, not just the brand.

Around 80 percent of furniture’s environmental impact happens before a piece ever reaches a home. That changes what the conversation should be about.

Not packaging. Not delivery.

Sourcing. Drying times. Joinery. How long a piece is built to last. And whether anyone returns to the forest after the harvest.

Slow design is not a look. It is a way of taking the material, the craft, and the forest seriously.
