We had the best time celebrating ’s opening of his new location in Ferndale. They showcased some spectacular pieces by inspired by her time in Greece… and Ebi ’s sculptures were the perfect centerpiece on the floor. Best of all was the company, and getting to meet David’s incredible roster of artists in person. Congratulations to the whole team 🥳

To the fathers who shaped me and our family — guided us along a stable journey, made us laugh, brought us joy, and did it all with immense love.

It’s all coming up roses.

“Aluminum foil is more than just a material, in the sense that it represents our family’s first taste of stability.”

Detroit based artist works with found materials a lot, often referencing his childhood, his family, and inexpensive materials ubiquitous throughout Detroit’s poorest neighborhoods. This side table is wrapped in aluminum foil, a reference to the Dallas-area aluminum factory where Schanck’s father worked. Frequently unemployed, his father moved the family a dozen times before landing work at the factory. He and his brother also worked there for a time.

Schanck told us that his family often couldn’t afford wrapping paper, and so when the holidays came along his mother would wrap the family’s presents in tinfoil instead… Now, his tinfoil wrapped artworks are found everywhere from Bottega Veneta’s Detroit pop-up shop to Rihanna’s home. Reminds me of that Picasso quote — “every child is an artist, the problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.”

Can you picture yourself as a kid on Christmas morning, the tree surrounded by aluminum foil presents glistening?! I think that childlike whimsy comes through in this piece situated in our client’s home… 🩶

A few more of Ebitenyefa’s pieces we just love… Go see his “HOST” exhibition on view until July 27 🏺

“People are hosts to one another. Our beings and lives are held within walls of flesh, emotion, and thought born of time and force (active and passive). We pass, converge, gather, and hold the myriads of things that make us vessels of humanity while meeting, navigating, or avoiding, through the gaze and presence of all we momentarily become host to or hosted by…

“The vessel is a container, a marker of life and civilization. It holds elements that sustain and support a society or household. It is a silent witness to the lives and worlds around it, a ready presence that receives and perceives without judgment while holding and reflecting its own story, walls, cracks, weight, and material nature.”

Artist spotlight…❣️
I’ve been following since I first saw his work at ’s studio showcase with . He was pursuing his MFA in ceramics following another impressive stint at . I was so taken by a sculpture in his studio… and feel so lucky to invest in a few of his pieces to display in my own home (on slide two) 😍 What do you think of Ebi’s use of color and form? 💭

A bit more on Ebi’s work via David Klein Gallery:
“Baralaye, known for his ongoing series of ceramic vessels and sculptures, Baralaye references Nsibidi script, traditions and the early practices of African craft in his work. Nsibidi is an ancient system of graphic symbols indigenous to southeastern Nigeria and Cameroon. Throughout his practice Baralaye has often referred to his family’s Nigerian heritage. A recent series focused on ceramic portraits that portrayed the living legacy of the matrilineal line of his family. For those portraits he used vessel-like shapes, adding sculpted eyes, hair and skin bearing witness to his ancestral and existential encoding.“

A favorite recent text from Kim 🤍 “It’s so important to wake up to a happy, joyful home. Might be one of the most important things in life… That good energy sets the tone for the start of each day, and flows into all our relationships.”

We always work backwards from our client’s tastes, comfort, and our site’s history… in this case, an early 2000s renovation left this home feeling dated and closed-off. We opened the living room and kitchen to create a grand Great Room spanning the whole home’s lake facing views…
Interior design tip 💡 when working with a space this big — double-height ceilings and all — we maximized the fireplace breadth with a large limestone face. Notice how small the original firebox opening is… Doesn’t the space feel balanced and welcoming with a larger hearth and mantel? 🤍

We couldn’t be more thrilled with the results of our client’s lakeside retreat… 🤍 Inspired by their world travels, we incorporated some Swiss and Belgian decor to make this Great Room feel like home and a vacation getaway all at once.
