Dahlia check in ✅
We survived another night of a frost here in Western Maryland. Thanks to the row covers!!

Today, I’m also introducing you to 2 Dahlia’s that are a MUST grow for my flower farm.
#59 is Cornel
#60 is Ivanetti

BOTH are medium sized ball shaped dahlias with strong stems & pretty consistent slightly upward facing blooms.
Cornel is a dark red
Ivanetti is a black raspberry color to me.

They can be dried very easily (hanging them in small bunches upside down) & have a strong vase life in fresh arrangements.

Dahlia # 58
This is Black Satin
Rich crimson dark burgundy color! Perfect for fall. Consistent bloomer with medium size 3” ball shape.
Grows almost 5’ tall & is a good tuber producer.

Dahlia #57
This happy bloom is a fantastic coral red!
This is Tempest

Such a unique color!! Great when combined with bright yellows & reds for a fall arrangement.
Only grew 3’ tall for me but it was also planted in a spot that did not get full sun. I know it would be much taller if it was given full sun.
Nice strong stems!

Temps are not predicted to be quite as cold overnight. Here’s hoping we make it through!

Day 1 of surviving 1st frost of the 2026 growing season.

Our Agribon row covers did the job pretty well.
Good news is if the Dahlia was under the row cover, it was just wet. No frost.
If the Dalia stems were outside the row cover, they did get frosted
So the majority of my Dahlia’s will be warmed up by the sun today and get to share their blooming joy with more people the next few days.

Whew!

Here in western MD there’s a Frost warning for tonight & predictions are calling for low of 34 degrees.

Our dahlias have officially been covered as best we can with 350’ of row covers.
The winds were NOT being very helpful!
But my mom & I were determined & we got it all done in about 2 & 1/2 hours.

Yesterday I posted a “Dahlia tip of the day” encouraging my flower friends to Label &/or Tag your dahlias while they are still blooming.

Frost warnings are beginning here in Western Maryland. This means that Dahlia season will come to an end soon.

The more organized & prepared you are in advance to easier & less stressful this next part of the dahlia journey will be.

Step 1
Label or flag your Dahlia’s while they’re still blooming
Attach the label or tie the flagging tape to the base of the Dahlia stem. Use Waterproof Markers!! Sharpies are NOT waterproof

I’ll be sharing my end of season dahlia process every step of the way!
