Hello! My name is Emily Price, owner and designer at Thirteen79 Design. In order for you to get to know me, my business and what I'm all about, I thought I’d share a small story about myself and the first piece of furniture I painted that started this whole “thing” for me.
So, me: I’m a wife, mama of 3...including 1 bonus baby, and Interior Design Grad from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. Through a few moves from state to state for my husband’s job and the addition a kid in each of those states (one a good 9 years after thinking I was done having kids) my career as an Interior Designer somewhat got put on the back burner. I became a stay at home mama....for the better, but always with design on the brain.
Fast forward to 2017, a toddler in tow, a new move and new house. In the process of emptying boxes and trying to clear out some things that weren’t being used, I sold an old gate that was a minty-turquoise, rusty, chippy beautiful mess of a piece that I acquired from my pre-kiddo days of working at Arhaus Furniture. Posted on a social media selling app and in a matter of minutes I had several “shabby chic, vintage lovin’, chippy turquoise paint diggin’ ladies” vying to get their hands on this gate. My husband said, “Emily, you could do this.” Meaning paint random objects in a chippy, rustic manner and sell them to make extra cash. Always wanting to try and contribute to the family income while managing the home and kid life I thought, “You know what. I really could.”
I dug right into a sweet little antique cabinet I had been “given” by a dear friend. The green paint had been bought and the how-to pins had been pinned before I found out I was pregnant with our third in 2015. Needless to say, the project got put on the back burner. Then, bam, like that, I had to awesome Kelly green, rustic, authentic chippy looking piece in my home! *see photo above for up close detail photo of this cabinet* I couldn’t believe how easy it came to me, how fun it was and most importantly, how much it fed my Design Soul that had been neglected for a bit. I was submerged back into a world of color, texture and design brain...(it’s a thing) and I loved it! It’s been completely rewarding to know that I’ve saved multiple pieces from the trash and brought life back into family heirlooms that have been hiding in basements for years. The whole “use what you have” term has so much meaning to me in the design world. It’s just a matter of editing and making it current and making it yours.
