One of my favorite unique touches: a painted cabinet interior .…..

There is something rather special about opening the doors of an old cupboard to discover a little unexpected colour inside. A painted interior gives an otherwise simple piece another layer of interest, almost like a secret little room within a room.

I’m rather partial to a good colour contrast, particularly when it sits so beautifully against the original wood or paintwork. And, of course, wallpaper can be just as lovely. A pretty print, a faded floral or something a little more whimsical can completely change the character of the piece.

It’s these small, slightly unexpected details that make collecting and living with antiques so much fun. Who says the inside shouldn’t be just as interesting as the outside?

A little introduction to the GB Candle Collection.

With new followers and lovely questions about the GB candles, it seems the perfect time to reintroduce them.

The journey began with a Parisian perfumer, working together to select our scents and describe the feelings, memories and moments each one evoked. The names, however, were a rather more domestic affair! Decided around the supper table with the children, we settled on some wonderfully British sayings that seemed to capture the character of each fragrance and the mood we wanted to create in different rooms and on different occasions.

Each candle is hand-poured using a carefully considered blend of coconut and soy wax, chosen for a beautiful, even burn of up to 80 hours. The double cotton wicks give a lovely, generous glow, whilst the generous 18oz size makes them quite the handsome addition to a sofa table, side table or favourite corner of the house.

And then there are the jars. Classic white, finished with a unique coloured seal embossed with the GB initials. A little detail, but those are often the things that make all the difference.

Now, the important question… which is my favourite?

Bright as a Button, with its pretty pink seal. A fresh, uplifting scent that is as cheerful as its name suggests.

It’s that time of year again!

Time to have a little fun with the table. Portuguese hand-painted plates, frilly striped napkins, velvet bows and taper candles in just the right colours. A mix of pattern, texture and a few unexpected touches is what makes a table feel special.

The holidays are all about gathering, and there’s nothing lovelier than setting the scene with things you love. No need for everything to match, of course, that would never do!

Hyacinth Heaven!

For as long as I can remember, hyacinth bulbs have been planted in just about any vessel that takes my fancy, from vintage jelly moulds to royal family commemorative mugs. Nothing is safe when hyacinth planting begins!

Their heavenly fragrance and pretty flowers are just the thing to bring a little joy indoors during the winter months. All that is needed is a bulb, a little soil and some moss to finish them off beautifully.

A little seasonal ritual that never loses its charm.

PS. The blue hyacinths are always the most fragrant, in my experience!
