The Brutes of Bristlebrook by
I know I'm late to the game on this series with over 24k ratings on goodreads but I just read them and I am so unbelievably into this series. It has everything I love wrapped into one gritty, emotionally heavy, strategic survival story that completely consumed me.
First off… Eden is one of my favorite FMCs I’ve read in a long time. She’s calm, intelligent, rational, emotionally grounded, and still manages to hold onto her humanity through absolute hell. I get so tired of FMCs making reckless decisions purely for drama, and Eden thought through each and every action and decision she made. It was a breath of fresh air. The tension and conflict come from the plot, the survival, the impossible choices, and the psychology behind those choices. It felt raw, dirty, realistic, and deeply human.
These are adults with real-life experience, trauma, strategy, and emotional depth. You can feel the military influence, the survival mindset, the body language reads, the chess-game maneuvering between characters. Everyone feels layered and intentional.
Then add in all my favorite tropes:
Why Choose ✔️
Dystopian survival ✔️
Ex-military protective men ✔️
Dom/Sub dynamics with actual psychological depth ✔️
Morally hard decisions ✔️
Dark emotional tension ✔️
A mentally strong FMC with the heart of a lion ✔️
And somehow this series balances all of that heaviness with humor and quirky moments that make the characters feel even more alive.
I don't think you could get any more variety of spice in a book and still manage to keep the plot going as good as this does! There's so much delicious why-choose spicy variety :)
This isn’t surface-level dark romance. It’s heavy, strategic, emotional, and forces the characters to live with the consequences of impossible choices. I felt the insecurities, the internal battles, the exhaustion, the hope, the desperation… all of it.
This is going down as one of my all time favorites!
I feel a candle label coming on...
