GM issued a real recall on 1970s Hurst T-top cars to fix a leak problem, with revised weatherstripping and a proper drainage channel built into the new frame design. Less than half of the affected cars ever actually got brought in for the fix. A lot of the ones still leaking today were never touched.

Arizona, Southern California, Nevada, New Mexico and West Texas invert the usual problem entirely. Cars distributed through Van Nuys and left in that dry heat show rockers, torque boxes and front subframes with zero through metal corrosion, just light surface oxidation after fifty years. What the desert takes instead is the interior. Dash pads warp and crack, wiring turns brittle, foam and vinyl disintegrate under decades of UV. Builders still pay a premium for these shells, because welding in new structural sheet metal is harder than reupholstering a cabin. Save for the next cars and coffee.

Pontiac built its V8s as one true family. Heads and camshafts interchange across displacements, 400 to 455 and back again, so a numbers-matching restoration still reads correct decades later even after the exact original part is long gone. Drop in the right later casting, run the correct gaskets, and the swap holds up under real scrutiny. That's the payoff of buying into one engine family instead of an orphan. Trans Am trivia: the earliest T-top Trans Ams weren't built that way at the factory. Pontiac built the car as a solid-roof hardtop first, then shipped it out to Hurst Performance, where the roof got physically cut open and the T-top frame and glass retrofitted in. The factory never handled a T-top in-house until GM's own Fisher Body division took the job back over in 1978.

Pontiac built a single V8 engine family and kept making it bigger.
The 389 wore Tri-Power, three two-barrel carburetors on one intake. The 400 is the anchor engine that carried the brand for a decade. The 428 stepped up before the 455 arrived. The Super Duty 455 topped the Trans Am lineup in 1973, and the performance matched.

Cloth interiors ran under different fabric names depending on the model year. Lombardy covered 1977 and 1978. Hobnail joined it for 1979 and 1980. Pimlico arrived for 1981 in tan. The option box on the order sheet stayed in the same place while the material behind it changed, because Pontiac was buying from mills on multi year contracts and the names travelled with the supplier rather than with the car. None of the three appear on the trim plate, which records a number and a letter and nothing about the weave. The names survive mainly in factory literature and dealer albums, which is why a correct cloth car is difficult to specify from the plate alone.

Blue is code 24 on a 1979 car and code 26 on a 1980 car, for the same colour family in consecutive model years. Pontiac renumbered the interior range more than once across the second generation, usually when a colour left or arrived, and the surrounding numbers shifted to accommodate it rather than holding position. Any cross year decoding chart that treats 1979 through 1981 as a single block will return the wrong colour on at least one of the three. The plate in the door jamb is the only thing that settles which year's numbering applies, and the model year has to be established from the VIN before the plate can be read at all.

Interior codes on these cars are two digits and a letter, and the letter carries the material. The 2 that closes out code 152 is the leather designator, sitting in the position that holds R for standard and N for deluxe on every other car in the range. Pontiac needed a symbol for a material it had never offered on this car and used the next available character rather than building a new field. A plate ending in 2 therefore identifies a 10th Anniversary interior on sight
