What is it about texture that is so enticing? Early on, when I first started painting, it was realistic and I tried to make my paintings really smooth, which could be frustrating. Over time, I realized that I was fascinated by texture and patina—think old buildings with crumbling walls, aged copper, tree bark, rocks, and so on. As my style evolved, it was obvious that texture is one of my muses, and it suits my painting aesthetic. I love creating a sense of history in a painting with layers and layers of paint. The pieces evolve over time and multiple studio sessions with results that are different and unpredictable every time. That’s what I love, I think. Even if asked to recreate a piece, it physically wouldn’t be possible because of my process and my obsession with texture. I could get it similar, but never the same. Shown is a close-up of texture in a work in progress.
