Yesterday’s Ikebana workshop featured the Ohara school of Ikebana which emphasizes natural environments. We used calla lillies as our subject (focal flower) and lisianthus as our object (support flower) and with a bit of tree fern for interest. This upright row design is a basic building block within the Ohara school. Using Ikebana principles has helped me create more open, free-flowing work in my garden-inspired designs. It’s nice to be the student. I come away inspired.

I aimed to make each side look like different parts of the garden and to hide the vases in the design. I also presented this design as part of the monthly floral challenge in the online contest of .
