This was another commission piece. Chris ( ), a woodworker friend and also an employee of Capital University ( ), referred me to complete these wood keepsakes commemorating the inauguration of their 18th President, Dr. Jared R. Tice. They provided me with a 95 # chunk of gray elm that had to be machined into these smaller pieces and etched with the seal and commemorative information. After working past all the natural "defects" in the original lumber, I was able to deliver 225 pieces. EDIT: Per concern from Meta that I am promoting the consumption of alcohol, I want to make it clear that this post is about the artistic interpretation of a glass bottle that a customer wished to have me reproduce in wood. It is not a promotion of that product - it is about the wood bottle that holds no liquid content.

From glass to grain. šŸ„ƒ I was recently commissioned to recreate a bottle of Straight Rye Whiskey entirely out of wood. This was a special gift for one of the partners at the Double Helix Wine and Whiskey Lounge, bringing a piece of Columbus, OH craft back to Nevada.

The challenge was in the detailsā€”from the segmented construction to the 'notch' on the bottom ring and the raised monogram on the base, I wanted every element of the original glass bottle to be represented in the wood.

Azure Swell - a maple ribbon, dyed blue, with gold leaf edges and post on a granite base. As pictured, the right end of the sculpture actually sits below the top surface of the granite. $2400.

Azure Swell, the first in this series, draws inspiration from the deep, rhythmic pulse of the ocean and the celestial glow of the horizon. The iridescent blue body represents the weight of the deep, while the hand-applied gold leaf traces the "break" of the wave, catching the light to highlight the grace of the curve. Suspense III - this natural colored ribbon is made of movingui wood. The conical stand which protrudes through the ribbon and the suspended sphere are made of maple and dyed going from yellow to fire red. The entire piece is finished with a water-based protective finish for long term appreciation. Depending upon how the piece is oriented, it measures approximately 13" wide x 10" deep x 11" tall. $2400.

Suspense III - this natural colored ribbon is made of movingui wood. The suspended sphere and conical stand which protrudes through the ribbon are made of maple and are dyed blending from yellow to fire red. The entire piece has a protective, water based finish. Depending on how it is oriented for display, this piece is approximately 14" wide x 10" deep x 11" tall. $2400.

I was very surprised to receive this recognition in the mail. BusinessRate does data analytics on Google reviews and tallies based on type of business and geographic area. A week ago, when I first posted this piece in progress, I mentioned that the design in the bottom of the bowl would match part of the design in the wall. I'm just about 1/2 way done - almost 1800 pieces - and I have just completed the first set of 4 copies of that pattern.

When completed - whenever that may be - this will be almost 7 inches deep. While not impossible to clean up the inside at that point, it's a lot easier to do it a bit at a time as I add rows; it is currently about 1-1/2" deep. To make each row larger, each of the 72 segments is a few thousandths of an inch larger than it is on the previous row. For the time being, I am only cleaning up the inside. The outside will be done when all the rows are in place. The final thickness will be a bit less than 1/4". Another benefit to smoothing it out at this point is the excitement of seeing the pattern emerge! All colors seen are natural.
