Finished up this walnut & cherry end-grain cutting board!

This one was built from solid American black walnut and cherry, individually cut and arranged into an end-grain checkerboard pattern. Finished with a routed juice groove, handholds, rounded edges, and a food-safe oil and wax finish to bring out the natural color and grain.

End-grain construction isn’t the fastest way to build a cutting board, but the finished product is absolutely worth it. It creates a durable cutting surface that’s easier on knife edges while showing off a completely different side of the wood.

This board is roughly 15” × 22.5” × 1.5” and is one of the largest sizes I’ll be offering through 5K Woodworks.

A matching pair built to let the wood do the talking.

These side tables feature solid Mappa Burl tops paired with handcrafted walnut bases. The wild grain, figure, and natural character of the burl make each top completely unique, while the dark walnut bases give them a clean, warm contrast.

One of my favorite things about working with burl is that you never really know what you have until the final sanding and finish bring everything to life — and these tops definitely didn’t disappoint.

Built as a matching set, but no two pieces of Mappa Burl could ever be exactly alike.

Just wrapped up this custom burl epoxy river table, and this one was a fun build from start to finish.

The top features a highly figured burl slab with tons of natural movement, character, and voids throughout the grain. I paired it with a deep teal epoxy river to create contrast without taking attention away from the wood itself. After flattening, shaping, sanding, and finishing, the grain really came alive and gave the whole piece a warm, glassy depth.

The table sits on a black steel base, which keeps the focus on the top while giving it a clean modern look.

Projects like this are why I love custom woodworking. Every slab is different, every pour has its own challenges, and the final piece ends up being completely one of a kind.

Finished and ready for its new home.

Wrapped up this custom kitchen island build—walnut base with a solid beech butcher block top.
