I spent some time in Barcelona this summer, and happened upon Cotton House Hotel. The original structure was built for Miquel Boada, a cotton merchant of the Catalan bourgeoisie, by architect Elies Rogent, back when the textile trade was thriving. That history is still so present in the proportions, the plasterwork, and the luxurious bones of the place.

What I loved most about the interiors is how the design respects the original architecture while layering in modern touches. Clean lined leather upholstery, contemporary lighting, modern artwork and oversized lamps, a la Dorothy Draper, sit comfortably alongside the Neoclassical details. It gives the space a rich, but current feel. Look closely at the details throughout and you can see a quiet nod to the Boada family’s roots in the cotton trade, a lovely way of honoring where the house came from.

It’s the kind of preservation that takes imagination, and it’s part of why I like the interiors. Sharing a few of my favorite photos from the hotel.

Ikea Part 2: Great design isn’t about where you shop, it’s about knowing what to look for. Ikea has so many great basics and always features confident color moments. Here are my thoughts on a few pieces I found when I stopped by.

Three powder rooms, three transformations. Swipe through to see each before image.

In two of these projects, we kept the existing vanities and focused the transformation around paint selections, fun hardware, modern lighting and wallpaper. The third was a complete gut, giving us the freedom to refresh the mediterranean style from a blank slate.

The throughline is the same: striking materials, a fresh look, and a willingness to take risks. Powder rooms are one of my favorite places to do that. I love the element of surprise, and every detail gets noticed when inside.

I turn to custom draperies in almost every project, and this month’s video breaks down what I like and why.  Fabric, hardware, construction, and installation all factor into the style and investment. Budget-friendly options have their place, but custom draperies look unmistakable and endure.

Before & after: a full gut renovation of a NYC penthouse, reimagined from the studs up.

We stripped the space down completely and rebuilt around a vision rooted in 1930’s Art Deco lines with a subtle Asian influence. A grid pattern carried through custom millwork, cabinetry, end cut Oak flooring, bronze metalwork and ceramic tile finishes for a sense of quiet continuity room to room. The client had one clear ask: it should feel like stepping into a luxury hotel, polished, considered, and calm.

I found one of my favorite pieces for my Connecticut home completely by chance at a storage warehouse.

Here’s what made it worth bringing home, why I knew it had potential, and how new upholstery completely transformed it.

Our project is underway in Montecito, California. Tile selection on a Spanish Colonial renovation is its own language — and we are still very much in conversation. More soon.
