La Dolce Vita translates to “the sweet life”. In Italy, that’s simply how life is lived. Beauty and function are not competing values. Everyday objects can be well made and beautiful. That sensibility is what I am reminded of when I think of time spent on the Italian coast and it shapes how I consider design on every project.

The greatest thing I’ve ever designed is a life with these two in it.

From a trip to Venice, celebrating our 10 year wedding anniversary some time ago. These two were the best travel companions we could have asked for, totally unfazed by the palazzos and perfectly at home on the marble stairs.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Last month, Ralph Lauren debuted two new home collections at their Milan Palazzo during Salone del Mobile and opened a new home store on Via del Spiga. I could not make it to the party, but I have thoughts of course.

I worked at Ralph Lauren early in my career, so I follow their home collections closely. Saddlebrook feels like a return to what they do best: the hurricane sconces are back and the pattern and plaid layering is characteristically Ralph.

Sterling Square is a different story. More feminine, lighter, and with a clear Art Deco influence.

“You will feel it altering the atmosphere, as all art should.” - Roberta Smith

Across every project, the right work of art has the ability to change everything about how a room feels — and these are some of our favorites.

This Highland Park, Texas residence needed a full rethink. The goal was to bring back classic architectural character to a Center Hall Colonial interior, while designing a home that could serve a young family.

Traditional millwork and built-in storage gave the pantry hallway and wet bar structure, creating a place to functionally conceal and beautifully store drygoods and barware— an essential consideration for a young family. A wallpapered ceiling added personality to an entertaining space that previously had none. I love designing these important smaller spaces.

During a recent trip to Paris, I saw the major retrospective of works by Gerhard Richter at the Louis Vuitton Fondation. I have admired his work for years, but I didn’t realize the versatility of his body of work. The most recent iconic squeegee paintings, black-and-white portraits, blurred landscapes, sculptural work, and more — he has had the good fortune as an artist to experiment with many styles and mediums. It was illuminating to see the collection in a single space. Unforgettable.

A beautiful home should also be a comfortable one. That’s a principle we bring to every luxury residential interior design project we take on, and this Preston Hollow living room is a good example of what that looks like in practice.

The layering here was intentional. Textured fabrics, varied materials, collected objects and art, each element chosen to add depth without adding noise.

I look forward to the Dallas Art Fair every year — and this year didn’t disappoint. Walking the fair before the preview party rush gave me the chance to visit with gallerists and discover several new artists now firmly on my radar.

A few things caught my eye this season: a quieter, more considered palette across many of the works; a notable shift away from fine art photography; and a strong leaning toward vertical format.

The best gallery walls are deeply personal, featuring artworks collected over time, gathered from travels or inherited from family. That history gives the art collection character. Framing brings it all together and can elevate mementos into an intentional part of the composition. That’s what I discuss in this edition of Earning Your Stripes, filmed in front of my own gallery wall in Dallas.

Our clients wanted a home that felt curated: fine art, bespoke furniture, and a color story rooted in blue and pink. Every decision we made in this luxury residential interior design project was in service of that vision. The art drove the palette. Selecting the right pieces, from sculpture to painting, was as integral to the design as any furniture or fabric choice.

Almost every project has a budget. Even the generous ones. And how that budget gets allocated is one of the most important conversations I have with every client.

Some elements are worth every penny — the pieces that define a room, that you interact with daily, where quality shows up in how something looks and how long it lasts. Others have exceptional options at a lower investment, and knowing which is which is a skill that comes with years of designing homes.

I call it investing and saving smartly.
