Fall is here, and I’ve always felt that seasonal decorating should last longer than a single holiday. I like to bring in the feeling of fall through deeper colors, warm candlelight, natural textures, and a few unexpected pieces that feel collected. The best part is that they can stay in place well beyond Halloween.

Looking back, this is a project that still really speaks to me. I’ve always been drawn to richer, more grounded tones, and I love how warm and inviting this home feels.

The family came from the East Coast, and preserving that sensibility was important. Muted colors, depth, and a sense of history give the home a collected, timeless quality.

Years ago, an Italian friend gave my husband and I this Murano glass decanter shaped like a Phylloxera, the tiny insect that devastated European vineyards in the 19th century. I’ll admit, at first I thought it was a little odd.

Over the years, I’ve grown to love it. There’s something wonderfully ironic about using the very pest that nearly destroyed European w**e production as a vessel for w**e. It’s unusual, has a great story, and has become one of those objects I would never part with.

The kitchen in this Modernist Penthouse had to do a lot of work. It sits open to the rest of the apartment, so it needed to feel beautiful day and night, and it needed a presence that matched the rest of the space: exotic, but still masculine.

A custom bronze countertop anchors the room and catches the light differently depending on the hour. End-cut white oak floors carry through from the rest of the apartment, so the kitchen never feels separated from the living spaces around it. And mirrored antique chicken wire glass adds texture and age in a way that keeps the whole room from feeling too polished or too new.

I found this fabric and leather studded French screen at a small antique shop in Connecticut years ago, and it’s still one of my favorite pieces in my Connecticut home. The colors – cream, camel and grey are ones I gravitate toward again and again. The SBL logo for example displays these three colors.

It also solved a real problem. It is a visual buffer between my Living and Dining spaces. Sometimes the best pieces aren’t the ones you plan for. They’re the ones you stumble on.

Every color choice in our Modernish Penthouse project started with the bronze window frames. This warm metal tone set the palette of camel, cream and chocolate brown. But I wanted contrast in the materials themselves, iron next to leather, mohair against warm wood, so the room had texture and depth even within a tight color story. Each material brings its own weight and finish and layering them together is what makes the space feel luxurious and masculine.

It’s Pumpkin Spice Latte season, my favorite time of year. Pumpkin represents the warmth and richness of the autumn season. In my interiors, this color is a sophisticated accent when layered with intention. Moving through three different rooms in this home, we used it to tie the spaces together.
