Finished! My second version of this early piece, this version entitled “Rough Rider”. Though there is no specific photo reference for this piece, the vaquero has always in my head been inspired by my father’s father, who ran a pool hall in Ocate, NM.

When I come to Santa Fe next month, I’ll be working live on two or three pieces (including this one) so that you can see various stages of the process. My pieces are made in stages that need to dry in between. I will have a landscape with just the graphite sketch and the shadows laid in, so that you can see me layer on the translucent color in oil. For this one, I have the color stages nearly finished, and you can watch me put in the clouds and the ink overlay before finishing the oil glazes. I’ll be we working live at Manitou galleries just off the square in Santa Fe from 11-4 May 8 & 9.

Sometimes I get really excited about a composition and an ink study, and then I have trouble getting what I expected out of the painting itself. This was one of those cases…I just couldn’t get the painting to come together as I’d imagined. Then comes that day when your eye shifts and you suddenly know. And there it is…boom! (With thanks to for the beauty and for convincing me I needed to get in the truck 😂)
