A treasured childhood memory crushed - the story of Mrs. Grass Chicken Soup.

Well, I decided to take a trip down memory lane recently and purchased the iconic Mrs. Grass’s chicken noodle soup.

For those unfamiliar with this product, let me elaborate. This soup comes in a box with:

- dry noodles
- a seasoning packet
- the inconic “golden nugget” - a large marble sized clear nugget in some sort of dissolvable coating that contained oils and bouillon

The maneuver is that you boil water, then add the dry noodles and seasoning packet. Finally, you drop in the golden nugget and watch it slowly dissolve, releasing the oils and bouillon.

Growing up, it was a great honor amongst my brothers and myself as to who had the honor of releasing the Golden Nugget. The lucky winner would release the nug and we would all watch with glee as it dissolved and disappeared.

To be honest, the soup itself wasn’t all that great - the noodles were thin & sparse, there were no chunks of chicken, and no vegetables either. It was basically just broth + noodles - good for when you had a cold or sore throat. But the golden nugget elevated it to mythical status when you were a youngster.

So I bought the soup, preparing to cackle with delight as I relived “releasing the Kraken”.

So you can imagine my confusion and abject horror when I couldn’t find the golden nugget anywhere amongst the contents of the 1st box. The soup generally comes in a 2 pack, so I opened the 2nd box and frantically searched for the nugget, only to be stymied once again.

In a fit of rage, I did an online search, and then discovered the ugly truth - Heinz had discontinued the golden nugget in 2016 😞

Son of a… another treasured childhood memory crushed, like a boot coming down on an unsuspecting insect.

Atomic Cowboy 🤠

This restaurant is a combination of 2 different franchises - Denver Biscuit Company, which makes primarily biscuit based breakfast & brunch grub, and Fat Sully’s, which specializes in pizza and burgers. I believe you can order from the Denver Biscuit Company until 2pm, whilst the Fat Sully’s menu is all day.

First off, the decor is rather hip here. They have a red LED / neon sign built into the floor as you enter the restaurant. There is a cool cowboy painting and a buffalo head mounted above the kitchen entrance. The 2nd room also has the roll up garage type doors you see at places like Postino’s.

My goto dish here early is the shrimp & grits. I get this every time we come for brekkie or brunch. I opt for cheesy grits and it is served with a delicious hearty sauce and an ample amount of shrimp, with their signature biscuit in the middle.

They have a plethora of biscuit sandwiches that all sound & look good and I may try one someday if I am feeling adventurous. My brother likes a more traditional breakfast with eggs & bacon and you can get that as well.

If we come in the evening, my favorite is the Lights Out Burger which is only $8.99? on Mondays - a great deal on this double smash burger with cheese. I highly recommend the parmesan garlic waffle fries as well.

All in all, this restaurant is a solid choice no matter when you go and is now in my regular rotation. My photos are from multiple visits, the latest being just today.

The fellas do IKEA…

My cousin Paul Bryan joined my brother Pete and I at our place the last 2 weeks - driving down Monday, having dinner, spending the night, then hitting the hot tub Tuesday morning and then adventures on Tuesday.

Highlights include a few new restaurants, Cherry Creek Mall, the Brass Armadillo antique warehouse, and IKEA. Paul Bryan also showed me his 1st house in Denver and the high end suit shop he used to work at.

It was a great time spent with him. When you find yourself retired and have no spouse or children or pets or job - then family & friends become everything.

Here are some photos from our 1st IKEA trip (yes, there were several). We of course had to hit up the Swedish food court. Pete & I had Swedish meatballs with creamy gravy, mashed potatoes, and lingonberry preserves / jam, with mixed vegetables. Paul Bryan had some vegetarian options so we all left satiated.

In the 1st few photos, showing the IKEA sign from inside - if you zoom in & look closely to the left of the “I” you will see Pike’s Peak in the distance - thanks Paul Bryan for pointing that out to me and helping me frame those photos accordingly.

3-2-1 Breakfast

This is my signature breakfast that I have been making for decades. I am not a talented cook but this is a very basic and easy to prepare dish that is fairly low carb, cheap, & tasty.

The basic formula:

3 strips of bacon 🥓 or sausage patties
2 eggs (scrambled or over easy)
1 hash brown patty

With this meal, I ended up burning the 1st batch of sausage patties and so I ended up only having 2. Stuff happens…

I do love having breakfast (food) for dinner. This meal was consumed at 10pm. That’s how I roll.

Capriotti’s Sandwich Shop 🥪

You get a double dose of Capriotti’s today. I visited the Denver location earlier but this is from my AZ trip last year. The review is the same but the pictures are unique to each location.

Capriotti’s is one of my favorite sandwich shops. I am lucky enough to have a Denver location close to my new home and I also frequented the location in South Scottsdale, AZ when I lived there and enjoy that location still when I visit.

This review is for the Scottsdale location. It is very convenient for me and I love quite a few of their sandwiches. They have a line of premium subs featuring American Wagyu roast beef and thise are my go-tos.

My favorites are:

- American Wagyu French Dip featuring Prime Grade Wagyu Beef from Snake River Farms topped with melted Swiss cheese, mayo, and a dash of black pepper & served with a side of hot Au Jus sauce for dipping

- Slaw Be Jo, which features Prime Grade American Wagyu Beef from Snake River Farms, coleslaw, provolone cheese, Russian dressing, and mayo.

I also really like the Capastrami featuring hot pastrami, melty Swiss cheese, crunchy coleslaw, and zesty Russian dressing as well as their line of cheesesteaks.

They have a Bobbie which is like getting a Thanksgiving meal in sandwich form - interesting concept although I haven’t tried yet. I will be back regularly and have joined their rewards program to get some freebies now and again.

I often come here with my brother and we order 2 medium sandwiches and go halfsies so we can sample more of their offerings. They are good enough to be on my rotation and so I will be visiting regularly and exploring more of the menu.

Veedu redux 🇮🇳

See what I did there? 😉

I recently got to revisit Veedu Indian kitchen in Midland, MI. It was a welcome meal back with some beloved family members so the company was the best. I decided to try shrimp this time and I ordered shrimp tikka masala with garlic cheese Naan. I also decided to live dangerously and upped the spice level from medium to spicy 🌶️ 🥵. It was a wise decision as the spice definitely warmed my lips up but wasn’t overwhelming. I still have my limits but I am enjoying the spicier sauce.

Everything was top notch as usual. We had a larger party so we sat in the back room, which turned out well as this spot was much quieter and allowed for better conversation. Later, we moved to the front room to watch the music as performer by Zap’inatra, the latest incarnation of my friend Earl.

Everything was fantastic and I was even able to talk to Selwyn, who was out of town in Dallas? and sent his wishes. This visit was in January so the patio was closed, but hopefully next visit will be in warmer weather and we can sit outside again. I will be back.

Radio / East - Austin, TX

I attended the Rhett Miller solo acoustic on 6/8/25 & Radio / East in Austin. I got there early and had some snack-age inside before heading to the back patio for the gig. It is a great venue so I am going to feature it in a joint post here as well as on my Facebook food blog Dan’s Dish.

I can’t wait to see another show there someday. I should note that one of my favorite Austin food trucks was parked there and serving food - Tommy Want Wingy. I didn’t partake on this occasion, but I did get after a basket of wings later that trip when they were parked at Barton Springs Saloon.

I wanted to keep things light and so I ordered some chips & salsa inside as well as a non-alcoholic beer. The salsa was delicious - fresh, chunky veggies, and the chips were thick & crispy.

There are some really cool paintings on the walls of the interior building and the patio outside is quite expansive. Since I arrived early, I got a great table right next to the stage. The performing stage is large enough to accommodate a full band easily. I am looking forward to another gig here and some light noshing and perhaps some food truck eats next visit.

Plate by Dzintra

I went to this Italian fine dining eatery primarily to see my family member Kevin Wiretree play live music. I also decided to have a nice dinner along with the entertainment.

The breads were fresh and served with whipped butter which always elevates fresh baked goods. Both the flatbread and baguette were delicious.

The salad I chose was the roasted beet & goat cheese salad. This was red beets served on a bed of baby arugula and sugar snap peas, with a raspberry Dijon vinaigrette. Add a whipped creamy goat cheese, candied pecans, and Italian parsley - it was delightful.

For my entree, I was in the mood for a blackened salmon Caesar salad. This was not a menu item, but the server & chef made it happen. And it was just what the doctor ordered - every bite was delicious.

The youngster with us just had a bowl of buttered noodles but they were quite tasty. Hopefully we will be back sometime to further explore their menu. One nice touch was the menagerie of fine cologne in the men’s restroom - something you very rarely see but was appreciated.

Scott’s Dish - brekkie edition

I recently got to hang with one of my oldest friends Scott Baker. I got to catch one of his gigs at a ski resort, and the next morning he made a fantastic breakfast. I should preface this by saying that Scott is a former chef and worked the brunch shift for many years, which honed his breakfast cooking skills. So I am excited to feature the 1st ever Scott’s Dish edition.

Anyone who has had breakfast with me before knows my favorite dish is Eggs Benedict. That is what Scott decided to make as the featured dish. He has come up with many variations of this meal at a few different restaurants he worked at.

This weekend, he stuck to a mostly classic version with poached eggs, Hollandaise sauce, spinach, and a local bread that toasts up rather nicely.

Other ingredients as part of the meal included:

- bacon 🥓
- sausage patties
- corned beef hash
- potato patties
- OJ

My appetitie is only a fraction of what it used to be, so I did my best but wished I had 2 or 3 more stomachs to fit more of the wonderful breakfast meal. It was a real treat and some of the best home cooking I’ve had in a long time. It was certainly a meal beyond my limited cooking acumen and I am glad to feature it here. Thanks again Scott for the delicious vittles.
