I had plans for February, and other things happened!

Our apartment complex had a major gas leak/ damaged pipes. So I was without heat and hot water for two weeks, and I still don't have gas for my stove/oven (with no end date in sight).

I am starting a support job at an elementary school in a week, and I'm very excited! But also very unsure whether I will have any energy left in my days, so I am going to deactivate all physical pieces from my sh0p. They might come back, they might not. They are available until Friday, March 6th.

My goal this year is to prove that I can handle working full (ish) time again, or to make doctors help me document that I actually cannot. Please wish me luck!

I hope you are able to care for yourself and your communities today! The horrors persist but so do we.

Most people find Prairielands Freedom Fund by word of mouth. A friend. A family member. An attorney. Someone, or the family of someone, we’ve helped before.

But this month, our hotline number spread inside ICE’s North Lake detention center, the Midwest’s largest and newest center, in rural Michigan after detainees were transferred there from Chicago.

When the calls came, we raised money. And we helped every person who reached out.
Money pays bonds. And bonds fight the deportation machine.

Now we have a second surge in requests for assistance and are urgently working to raise money.

I don't expect anyone else to show up tonight, but I am here! If you feel like stopping by, I will be going to be coloring and/ or working on planning this meet up better, and I'd love company ❤️

I am planning to be here every Monday with simple crafts, ready to talk about how we can show up for folks here in Des Moines, and to just get to know people.

Starting tomorrow!

Every Monday evening, come hang out, do small crafts, and let's get to know each other. I want to build a resource for organizing with people and helping each other process current events so we can stay present.

There are other folks who have been creating and offering space here in Des Moines! I might put together a post with all of the cool things I have been *meaning* to actually join. But not having a car, some are difficult for me to get to physically. When I can get out of my own brain/ stress, I know that if something is true for me it's probably true for others, so I'm starting this very central and bus!accessible meeting ❤️

I really want a space where the base expectation is just to show up, and to do something with my hands. So I'm starting one.

It will likely just be me tomorrow since I'm so late in actually planning/ posting this, but I'd love to see anyone who can to come! And I will keep doing this every Monday evening ❤️

General Strike!

I'm under/unemployed (and working on changing that other days), so today isn't necessarily differentfrom a regular day for me. But.

People in online activist spaces have been boycotting and talking about a general strike for a long time. And the reasons for and against putting our energy into them are week discussed. But.

Big societal changes need big portions of society to make them. And this moment feels more active and ready for change than any I have lived through. We need to know reasons for and against different actions, but at also need to be ready to join mass movement when it comes around.

Let's all take advantage of this moment to the best of our ability. Support folks on the ground, get to know our neighbors, and organize with the people around us ❤️❤️❤️

There are frequent rumors of ICE activity in Des Moines, and this week none have been verified but it's very hard to dismiss the possibility.

There is already a great site where we can report ICE activity/ presence at iceout.org !

The site moderators verify/ categorize everything, so you can see when a sighting has been verified as reliable (the markers with check marks) or not yet. Unverified reports are useful, especially if a bunch of individuals start reporting activity before verification can happen. But it's also super important to share information and not rumors/ fear. And keep showing up for each other!

Trump is speaking in Des Moines this afternoon-- or actually Clive, one of the suburbs/ cities in the Des Moines metro area.

He's at the Horizon Events Center, which is... small. There are plenty of larger event spaces they could have booked of they expected popular support. Including Des Moines Capitol Hill itself, where i have attended protests and rallies, and which could accommodate thousands of organic attendees.

Horizon Events Center says it can "easily accommodate groups from 25 to 3,000 people."

Des Moines is small for a city. The whole metro area is about 750,000 people. Only feeling confident you can draw 3,000 as the president is pretty pathetic, and bet there will easily be more protestors than attendees. And Clive's designated 'Free Speech Zone' is unlikely to be large enough.
